I could see him losing the battle. All I needed from him was just one kiss, to cement the deal.

“I need to go after her,” he said suddenly, stepping back from me. “I need to make sure she’s okay.”

Frustration bubbles from somewhere in my chest as I gritted my teeth. Even with the compulsion spell working on him, his mate bond was still strong enough to pull him toward Lumina. I needed to act fast before he could leave.

“Please don’t go,. What if she tries to hurt me again when you leave. I am so scared. I don’t understand why she hates me so much,” I sobbed, burying my face in his chest. I was pretending to fake cry to keep his attention on me as I continued on with my word vomit.

“I’ve tried so hard to be friendly, to make peace with her. But she sees me as some kind of threat.”

His arms came around me automatically, holding me close as I cried against his shirt.

“You’re not a threat,” he murmured into my hair. “You’re… you’re like a sister to me now. Family.”

Sister. The word hit me like a slap.But I couldn’t let my frustration show. Not when I was so close to getting what I wanted.

“You’ve always been so good to me,” I said, pulling back to look at him with my tear-filled eyes. “So protective. I used to dream about having someone who cared about me the way you do.”

“I do care about you,” he said, and I could see that he sounded sincere about that. “I want you to be happy, Sophia. I want you to find

someone who deserves you.”

“What if I’ve already found him?” I asked, letting my meaning be clear.

I rose up on my tiptoes and pressed my lips to his, as I pulled him against me and kissed him. For a moment, he didn’t respond, and I thought I’d miscalculated. But then I felt him kiss me back.

This was it. This was the moment I’d been working toward for six years.

But just as I was about to deepen the kiss, a familiar voice cut through the air, interrupting us.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?”

I broke away from Xenois to see Thorne who was standing a few distance away from us, his face filled with anger and disgust. His constantly moved between us, taking in the scene with obvious disapproval.

“Thorne, Xenois said, his voice confused as he stepped back from me. “I didn’t hear you approach.”

able to break through the compulsion on Xenois

“It’s not what it looks like,” I said quickly, trying to salvage the situation.

“Really? Because from where I’m standing, it looks like you’re taking advantage of whatever’s going on between Xenois and Lumina to

make your move.”

“Thorne, that’s enough,” Xenois said, but his voice lacked conviction.

“No, it’s not enough,” Thorne replied, stepping closer to me, with a threatening aura as she said on a calm yet dangerous voice. “I suggest you back off, Sophia. Whatever game you’re playing, it ends now.”
