As soon as Melanie finished, Willow blacked out and collapsed.

Gresham and Viola just froze, too stunned to respond.

At Mount Emberwing, the police and ambulance had already arrived.

After an hour of effort, they finally got Elmer out.

Anyone else would have died from a fall like that, but Elmer was lucky–he survived.

He’d landed in the thickest part of the forest, and the branches helped break the fall. That was the only reason he was still alive.

But he was barely hanging on.

His legs were crushed and bloody beneath a huge rock, the bones exposed.

There were deep cuts across his face from the branches–so deep that bone was visible. His looks were ruined for good.

When the firefighters carried him out, he kept coughing up blood. As soon as he saw Noelle, he became even more agitated, spitting up even more blood.

“Noelle!”

He used every bit of strength to shout her name only to spit up another mouthful of blood. He kept coughing and couldn’t say another word

“I’m here.”

Noelle understood precisely what he was trying to say and replied with a cheerful smile.

“Elmer, look at you now. You’re so pathetic and disgusting.” She looked him up and down, her grin widening at the sight of his ruined legs.

Elmer shook all over.

Stephen breathed a sigh of relief. He knew it was true, but he’d never expected things to turn out like this.

He never wanted Elmer to end up crippled.

Noelle stopped, looked at Stephen, and said, “Let’s go. What happened to Elmer has nothing to do with you. Also, Janice isn’t a good girl. You might want to let her go.”

“Yes, yes! I’ll break up with Janice as soon as I get home! I won’t bother with her again!” Stephen agreed right away.

Noelle walked away, and just as she did, the Kains rushed in.

Willow had just come around, but when she saw the bloody Elmer on the stretcher, she nearly fainted again.
