Her expression went blank. But her eyes–they were boiling over with rage. Not just from being caught, but from something else, too. Something deeper. Something that had been buried for years and finally clawed its way to the surface.
Viola flinched. Just a little. Then she squared her shoulders and forced a crooked smile, one that dripped with fake confidence and bitter pride. “What’s wrong? Did I hit a nerve? Feeling that guilt crawl back in?” Her tone was razor–sharp, “What were you–seven? Eight? That young, and already so heartless? You’re the one who lost your baby sister! Just imagine what your precious grandfather or your perfect parents would think if they found out. Think the family would still let you stay in that mansion?”
Alina’s chest rose and fell fast. She closed her eyes. She sucked in one shaky breath after another, trying to hold back the panic and rage threatening to tear through her.
When she opened her eyes again, every ounce of warmth had vanished. All that remained was cold, hollow fury. She stared at Viola like she wasn’t even a person.
“What do you want?” Her voice scraped out of her like glass on stone.
Viola’s heart skipped. She felt it. That win.
She clung to it like a lifeline, trying not to gloat too openly. “I don’t want anything.” Her voice softened, dripping with sugar. “Just a reminder, Alina … neither of us are saints. We’re cut from the same cloth. So maybe it’s time we start acting like it.”
She paused. Her tone dipped, twisted into something dark and sharp. “From now on, we stay in our own lanes. You keep playing their perfect little angel. I’ll keep being the second daughter. You don’t mess with me, and I won’t mess with you.”
Her eyes narrowed to slits. “Oh, and one more thing… Kingstowne’s trying to dump everything on me. You’re gonna fix that. Fast. Because if I get dragged down, who knows what might come out of my mouth? If I burn, I’m taking the whole house with me.”
Alina stared at her. That smug, delusional smile. That greedy sparkle in her eye. It made her sick. But something inside her finally broke.
cold.
She was tired. “I’ll handle the school.” Her voice was ice–cold. The words came slow, each one heavier than the last. “Now get out. And remember what you just said. If you step out of line again, I’ll make sure you regret it.”
The door slammed shut behind her.
The sound echoed through the room like a crack of thunder. Alina sank into her leather chair. It felt like her whole body had turned to lead.
She covered her face with both hands.
Her shoulders trembled, but she didn’t make a sound. That scared little girl who had once made a mistake too awful to undo had just been dragged out into the light.
And Noelle-
Her baby sister.
She couldn’t even look at the truth. She didn’t have the strength. She couldn’t bear it.

Across town-
Noelle had gone to the hospital.
Mick’s leg was healed.
The concert was still on.
“Dr. Kain, thank you! Thank you so much!” Roger looked like he was about to drop to his knees right there in the lobby.
Even Mick, who never showed much emotion, glanced her way with something softer in his eyes.
“Dr. Kain,” Roger added quickly, “we’d be honored if you came to the concert. If you’re free, we’d love to have you.” He handed her a neat little stack of tickets. Five in total. He’d love for Noelle to bring some friends.
Mick pressed his lips into a line.
He looked at her, too.
So what?
It was Roger who invited her, not him!
He didn’t care if she showed up. It meant nothing.
“I’m not sure I’ll have the time…” Her voice trailed off.
Mick’s eyes dimmed. His lips tightened.
But then Noelle paused. Eleanor and the girls came to mind. They adored Mick. Seeing him live would make their week.
“Can I get a few more tickets?” she asked. “I want to bring some of my classmates, too.”
Mick’s eyes lit up.
Roger practically bounced in place. “Of course! As many as you need! I’ll get you front–row seats for all of them! Should I mail them to you?”
She nodded softly.
Right then, her phone buzzed.
t was Serena.
