Hailey nodded repeatedly, her eyes shining with excitement. “Don’t worry, Claire! I’ll make sure she’s completely won over!”
What she was really thinking, though, was this: once she latched onto the Guzman family, she would make Noelle pay–old grudges and new ones, all settled at once.
That evening, at the Guzman residence.
Mary slipped back inside quietly from outside. She had just changed her shoes when she looked up–and froze. Angus and Alina were sitting on the living room couch, their sharp gazes fixed squarely on her.
“Dad… Alina, you’re still up?” Mary’s heart jumped, though she forced herself to sound calm.
Angus set his teacup down and asked in a low voice, “It’s this late. Where have you been?”
“I–I didn’t go anywhere. Just… played cards with some friends. We ran late,” Mary replied, her eyes darting away.
Angus studied her deeply but didn’t press further. He only said, “This weekend, you stay home. Don’t go anywhere. Jonathan’s blind date–the Flynn family’s eldest daughter–is coming over. You’re his aunt. You should be present.”
“Alright, alright,” Mary answered quickly, as if afraid that lingering even a second longer would expose her. She hurried upstairs.
Watching her slightly flustered retreat, Angus frowned and turned to Alina. “Alina, look into what she’s been up to lately. She’s acting strangely secretive.”
Alina’s expression was complicated. She nodded. “Yes, Grandpa.”
At Viola’s villa.
Viola held her phone, reading Mary’s reply, “This weekend, the family has guests. I’m busy and won’t be coming over for now,” and she pouted slightly.
Her fingers flew across the screen.
Viola typed, “Okay… Mom, you’re busy. It’s just… I think I caught a cold. My head feels so dizzy, and I feel awful… There’s nothing much to eat at home either…”
She sent the message and waited patiently.
Sure enough, not long after, Mary replied, saying she’d had porridge and medicine sent over and told her to rest well
Viola curled her lips in satisfaction.
See? All it took was a little weakness–Mary still softened every time.
What delighted her even more was that, not long after, the doorbell rang
She ran to open the door–and there stood Mary herself, holding a thermal container, her expression hesitant.
“Mom! You really came!”

Viola immediately put on a mix of surprise and grievance, clinging to Mary’s arm. “I feel so terrible… I knew you wouldn’t ignore me…”
Mary looked a little uncomfortable being held like that, but seeing Viola’s pale face, her tone softened. “I brought you some porridge. Have it while it’s hot…”
As they spoke, footsteps suddenly sounded at the villa entrance.
Mary and Viola both turned their heads–and saw Alina standing there, her face icy, her gaze sharp.
Mary’s face drained of color instantly. The thermal container nearly slipped from her hands.
“A–Alina? Why are you here?” Her voice cracked.
Alina’s gaze slid between Mary and Viola, finally settling on the smug, provocative look on Viola’s face. A chill spread through her chest.
She understood everything.
“Mom, go upstairs and rest first. Miss Kain and I need to have a few words.”
Alina’s tone carried an undeniable authority.
Mary panicked. She looked at Alina, then at Viola, her lips trembling. “Alina, you … don’t… Viola, she saved my life…”
“Mom.” Alina’s tone hardened.
Mary knew she was in the wrong. Intimidated by Alina’s piercing stare and afraid of causing a scene, she could only cast an uneasy glance at Viola before turning and going upstairs.
The moment Mary disappeared around the stairway corner, the fragile, pitiful look vanished from Viola’s face, replaced by brazen arrogance and malice.
She leaned against the doorframe, looked at Alina, and let out a soft laugh.
“Well, Ms. Guzman, what a coincidence. You came to see me, too?”
