The guard’s hand froze mid–air. He blinked in surprise, then laughed. “You? Kid, how old are you? Twenty? Barely in your twenties? Do you even know what illness Mrs. Covington has before claiming you can cure it?”
“I do.” Noelle looked at him calmly. “She’s been paralyzed in both legs for years and can’t walk.”
The guard’s smile stiffened for a second, though he didn’t think much of it. Everybody on the island knew about Elsa Covington’s condition.
“Who on this island doesn’t know that? Go on, get out of here already. You’re younger than my daughter. What could you possibly know about medicine-”
“My age doesn’t matter,” Noelle said. “What matters is that I can heal her.”
“Quit causing trouble and get the hell out before we throw you out ourselves!”
The guards were already getting impatient and about to move when footsteps sounded from behind them.
“What’s going on?”
A young man’s voice drifted over lazily, calm and unhurried.
The guards immediately stepped aside and lowered their heads. “Mr. Covington.”
The newcomer looked to be in his early twenties. He wore a light wool coat with dark stitching along the cuffs, and a silver pocket watch hung from his belt, swaying lightly with each step.
He was handsome enough, but there was a sickly air around him. Dark circles shadowed his eyes like he hadn’t slept properly in
years.
His gaze swept over the group before landing on Noelle.
“What are you here for?”
Sidney hurriedly stepped forward to explain, but Noelle stopped him with a single look.
“We’re here to treat Mrs. Covington,” she said directly.
The young man raised a brow and sized her up.
Dusty headscarf. Rough homespun clothes. Smudges of dirt across her face. She looked exactly like some random fisher girl from the docks.
He smiled. There wasn’t any mockery in it. He just found her interesting.
“You? Treating my mom?”
“Yes.”
“You know what condition she has?”
“She’s been paralyzed in both legs for years. Her muscles have wasted away, and her blood flow is blocked.”

“Everyone on the island knows that.”
“Then I’ll tell you something they don’t know. Like your condition.”
Noelle sounded perfectly calm.

“Your lower back aches constantly. You can’t sleep at night, and when it gets bad, the pain keeps you awake until morning
The smile slowly disappeared from the young man’s face.
He stared at Noelle differently now.
He had never told anyone outside his family about his condition, so how could she possibly know?
“How do you know that?” His voice dropped lower.
“I can tell just by looking.” Noelle said, “Your balance shifts to the left when you walk, which means your right leg has an old injury You probably fell as a child and never healed properly. The dark circles under your eyes and your sallow complexion mean your digestive system’s weak from years of stress and irregular eating habits. Your tongue coating should also be thick and greasy.”
The young man’s expression changed completely.
His right leg really did have an old injury. When he was ten, he’d fallen out of a tree and fractured the bone. It had taken him six months to recover, but ever since then, he’d always walked with a slight imbalance.
Even the servants closest to him might not know about that. Yet this girl saw through it in one glance?
The guards panicked. “Mr. Covington, don’t listen to her nonsense! She’s obviously some scam artist-”
“Enough.” The young man raised a hand, cutting him off.
He looked at Noelle seriously now.
“You’re saying you can heal her?”
“I can.”
“And if
you
fail?”
“There’s no such thing as failure.” Noelle’s tone never changed. “There aren’t many illnesses in this world I can’t heal.”
That claim was outrageously arrogant.
Anyone else would’ve probably thought she was insane.
But the young man laughed.
Not mockingly. He genuinely found her fascinating.
