“It’s not really,” Evan murmured. “But I have to be within my protective range. Otherwise, even if I’m lying perfectly still right next to the bed, I just can’t fall asleep.”
Annelise reached out and gently stroked his face. “Then it looks like you’ve got your work cut out for you-ten days of guarding me while I sleep, and after that, you’ll be raising the cubs too. But hey, Evan, you’re an ornamental shifter Are you sure you can protect me?”
Evan frowned, just a little.
He wasn’t mad-just mildly embarrassed.
He tapped Annelise lightly on the lips and said, “Sleep. No more talking.”
He knew full well-Annelise didn’t need protecting. Her true form was powerful. Stronger than his. And unlike most mates, he wasn’t even a full carnivore-type shifter, so it wasn’t like he could defend her the way others could.
Still, the urge to protect her was too strong. He had to hold her like this. Had to wrap around
her.
Annelise could tell what he was feeling. So she said, “You know, last time I didn’t get a good look when you did your peacock display. Most shifters show off their ears or tails; you barely revealed yours. Come on, show me again.”
“Alright.”
Evan slowly unfolded his feathers at the edge of the bed.
Meanwhile-somewhere else-Adrian suddenly sat bolt upright.
His eyes were blank. Ominous black smoke curled around him.
Hudson wasn’t in the room. He was outside, sitting under the moonlight, holding his egg and whispering sweet things to it. He’d slept too much during the day and wasn’t tired at night.
Rokky, on the other hand, was still sound asleep in the same room as Adrian.
Riven had just lain down when a scent hit his nose.
There’s something dangerous.
The kind of smell that meant a predator had entered the territory-something powerful and

deadly.
He leapt out of bed instantly.
The night continued.
Inside, Annelise was delighting in Evan’s full peacock display.
Absolutely stunning.
She leaned in close, gently running her fingers through the dark green plumage.

It wasn’t soft and fluffy like Hudson’s tails-it was firm, yet still had a softness to it. The sensation in her hands was entirely different.
She bent down and kissed the fluffiest part of his feathers.
Curious, she asked, “Does that… feel like anything? I mean, kissing your tail probably doesn’t feel like, you know, that. It’s not a mating thing, right?”
Evan’s expression remained calm, though his brow furrowed slightly.
“Ms. Crawford,” he said gently, “you should rest.
She giggled and continued playing with the soft feathers.
That’s when it happened.
A loud, guttural scream pierced the quiet night.
“Ahhhhhh!”
Startled, Annelise flinched-yanking out one of Evan’s tail feathers by accident.
“Hhss-” Evan sucked in a sharp breath.
“Oh no! I’m so sorry! Reflex! Total reflex!” she blurted out.
The feather she’d pulled was stained with a little blood.
Evan quickly folded away his display and turned toward the window. “Ms. Crawford, that voice… It’s rough. Not a sound I recognize. What the hell got into our yard?”
Annelise groaned. Can I just get one night of peace around here?
Thankfully, she hadn’t changed into her sleepwear yet.

She and Evan followed the sound and tracked it to the small house where Adrian and Rokky were sleeping.
Inside, they found Riven gripping Adrian’s wrist his hand glowing with fire.
He was burning Adrian’s skin-and that rough, monstrous howl was coming from Adrian himself.
Annelise blinked in disbelief. Wasn’t Adrian supposed to have a soft, delicate voice?!
“What’s going on?!”
Rokky’s five tails and pointed beast ears stood on full alert, flaring out in alarm. He crouched low at the foot of the bed, completely on edge like a wild animal.
The moment he saw Annelise, he sprang to her side, moving like a beast as he dropped to all fours to shield her.
“Ms. Crawford, something’s seriously wrong with this bunny.”
He explained that Adrian had been sleeping right beside him. Rokky had intentionally kept close, just in case anything happened during the night.
Normally, even the slightest movement would’ve woken him up. But just now, Adrian had stood next to him, and he hadn’t sensed a thing.
It wasn’t until Riven grabbed Adrian’s outstretched hand that Rokky jolted awake.
“Ms. Crawford… I think… he was trying to hunt me.”
“What?!” Annelise gasped.
