Chapter 176 I Can Try
“Right now, it all comes down to fate-and me. I’m just going to be honest with you. I don’t know if I can save every single one of the little ones, but I’ll do everything I can.”
The High Priest gave a firm nod.
“If there’s anything you need me to do, just say the word!”
Annelise knew how much he hated this disease.
He wanted to do more, as if fighting harder would somehow defeat it.
So she said, “Mr. Allen, that’s all I’ve got for you at the moment. If you’re feeling tired, take a break. Because… you’re gonna need to look sharp when you see how this battle turns out.”
She was excited.
To her, this was a head-on match against smallpox.
It was thrilling to see something that only existed in textbooks. There was no way she wasn’t going to challenge it.
Annelise carried a bunch of weeds into her room.
She told everyone to stay out.
The rest of the mates stayed in the little courtyard. They all knew what kind of crisis the community was facing.
Annelise shut the door behind her, then yanked it open again.
“Hey! Make sure you keep an eye on Evan. In our place, he’s the only one a little weaker. He the only one who might catch it. The rest of us should be fine, so don’t ask him to do anythin for the time being. No chores. Nothing.”
She also gave a specific order to Hudson. “Tonight, use that huge tail of yours to keep him covered. Don’t let him get cold. Got it?”
Hudson nodded right away.
Honestly, even if Annelise hadn’t already planned to stay up all night, she would’ve told Evan to just come sleep in her room.
But Evan didn’t think like that.
To him, there wasn’t a single good thing about himself.
He wasn’t like Annelise’s other mates who could go out and hunt like it was nothing.
Now he couldn’t even resist disease as well as they could…
Was he really just a decorative shifter?
Even though Annelise was going out of her way to protect him, Evan didn’t feel the slightest bit happy about it.
Hudson walked over and said, “Evan, keep holding the egg for me, okay? I’ve got extra tails. They’re warm.”
“Uh… okay.”
“Wanna sleep all cuddled up tonight?”
Evan pressed his lips together and said nothing, but his mind was already spinning.
Hudson saw that look on Evan’s face again. He walked over and tugged on Evan’s sleeve. “Evan, what are you thinking about?”
“Nothing.”
If Evan was hiding something, Hudson always knew.
“Come on,” he said. “We’ve been close since the beginning. What could you possibly not tell me?”
Evan looked at Hudson.
That same little fox he used to worry about wasn’t so little anymore. Not since the baby cam Not since the tails grew in.
The whole chicken was still intact-except for the one leg missing.
And everyone knew Annelise could easily take down a whole roast chicken in one sitting.
Not to mention she’d been at it since morning.
Right after finishing her session with Adrian, she’d headed out with Riven.
That much energy burned? Of course she should be starving.
Adrian let out a gravelly duck-like croak. “She barely ate. That’s not okay. What if her body gives out?”
Hudson looked back at him. More specifically, at the bite marks all over Adrian’s face. He caught sight of the love bites covering Adrian and bumped him with his shoulder.
“Don’t jinx it.”
“Ah! Don’t hit me! That hurts!”
“I didn’t even hit you that hard.”
“I know, but my back’s killing me. My legs too… and… and down there…”
Hudson quickly shoved his big fluffy red tail over Adrian’s mouth.
One of his fox ears stood upright. The other flopped to the side.
His expression matched-one eyebrow lifted, the other gently drooping.
“Enough! This is about Ms. Crawford barely eating, not your junk.”
Adrian snorted. “Tch.”
And the sun started to sink into the horizon.
