Chapter 75 Becoming the Chosen One

“So that’s him? They call him the High Priest to distinguish him from later shamans, right? The very first one?”

Isn’t he the first chief’s mate?”

Annelise narrowed her eyes as she looked at the High Priest, an uneasy feeling rising in her chest. When the first fed, her intentions had been clear-she did not want anything to do with him, nor did she want to become chief

She felt the High Priest would’ve been aware about this, so why was he here?

Annelise blinked at the blonde-haired High Priest, signaling that she did not need his help and could handle things herself

Instead, the High Priest returned her look with an indulgent smile, his expression gentle and

soft

“You see…”

The High Priest turned directly to the chief and said. “The saintess has already been chosen. It’s her, Annelise Crawford”

The chief immediately said, “Aren’t there other candidates? We could select several together-”

“No. This year, there’ll only be one,” the High Priest replied calmly. “She calmed the savage beast that was held in captivity. That is the earliest, and most authoritative, criterion for choosing a saintess

Annelise grinned. “Well, I’m not interested in becoming one.”

The chief grew even more anxious. “Choosing multiple saintesses would benefit the tribe’s growth. Didn’t you say that as long as they passed the trial—”

The High Priest raised a hand, cutting her off.

“Those later rules existed only because so few females could calm the beast. We had no choice but to make do with whoever was available.

The chief was already furious, and she had to swallow another bout of fury.

“Mr. Allen, Annelise has no roots in this tribe at all. She was an egg carried here by a giant bird. No one even knows what sort of shifter she is.”

“Does that matter?” the High Priest replied calmly. “My own matriarch once brought shifters from other tribes to settle here and intermarry with the natives. All this talk about her having no roots… What if I acknowledge her as my daughter?”

Annelise’s eyes widened.

She hurried over and grabbed his hand. “Mr. Allen, please think this through. I’m pretty happy with my current life. Being a saintess means plenty of learning, which won’t make me happy!”

The High Priest patted her head and said gently, “You can still be happy. Come on, you’ll just be a saintess for now. No one’s asking you to become chief right away. What’s there to be afraid of? And from now on, you’ll call me Father.”

“I-”

This old man was really forcing his way into becoming someone’s father.

The High Priest then turned to the chief and said, “Don’t worry, though. There will be more saintess selections in the future. I will remain fair and impartial. If another female comparable to Annelise appears, I will choose her as well.

“What matters now is properly disciplining your daughter. Three months is far too lenient. How can the tribe tolerate such a malicious female? If she becomes a saintess and later chief, wouldn’t the entire tribe fall apart if she abuses her power for personal gain?”

The High Priest thought for a moment. “Confine her for six months instead. Have her kneel for the first three months, and caned for the first ten days.”

Annelise gave a thumbs-up when she heard that. “That’s more like it.”

The chief clenched her fists tightly behind her back, but there was nothing she could do.

The High Priest was the first-ever chief’s mate. He’d taught all the later shamans everything they knew-from reading the stars, praying for rain, and making sacrifices.

Calling him the acting chief would not have been an exaggeration.

Meanwhile, Adrian stood to the side bitterly. He bumped Evan with his shoulder. “And just like that, there’s another one. That makes six already.”

Evan looked confused. “Six? How did you get six? You, me, Rokky, and the little fox. Isn’t that only the four of us?”

Adrian counted his fingers. “You forgot Snowball. Now, we’ve got this blonde guy. I got a feeling he’s a carnivorous shifter too. That makes six.”

Evan frowned. “Ms. Crawford thinks of Snowball as a younger brother.”

A younger brother can still become a mate. They’re not related by blood, after all,” Adrian replied. “This blonde one might be old, but Rokky isn’t very far off either.”

Evan was speechless. “Rokky’s only forty. This one is over two hundred. You heard it yourself- he’s the first-ever chief’s mate.”

Adrian rolled his eyes. “A mate isn’t forbidden from being bonded again. Besides, he looks young

Evan thought about smacking him.

“I think it’d be better if that thing of yours never heals,” Evan said bluntly. “Ms. Crawford says you have anger issues. You basically ruined it by getting mad all the time. Even if it heals, it’ll just break again. Might as well keep it that way.”

“You’re only so relaxed because you were the first to mate with the matriarch!” Adrian shot back. “Just you wait. Being early doesn’t matter. The end game is far more important.”

He continued, “Who cares if you were the first to mate? You definitely won’t be the first to have cubs.”

Annelise turned around and shot Adrian a sharp glare.

She thought, You’re being way too loud. People over there can hear everything.

She gestured with her hands, making a slicing motion as she pointed straight at his lower body.

Adrian immediately clamped his legs together.
