Chapter 77 You’re One of a Kind

218

After Annelise’s hand brushed against Hudson’s belly, the discomfort came rushing back. His belly felt swollen and sore-though nowhere near as painful as it had been the day his mind had been lost in a haze.

Worse still was the heat pooling between his legs, a sensation he seemed unable to control. With Annelise cradling his tail, a fine tremor ran through his entire body.

Control yourself, he pleaded silently. Just keep it together.

“I’m telling you,” Annelise said, her voice cutting through his spiraling thoughts. “Bottling things up and letting your imagination run wild will only wear you down. I’d bet anything you’ve been losing sleep, feeling restless, and dreaming far too much, haven’t you? Instead of torturing yourself wondering if you’re just a replacement, why don’t you just ask me?”

At her words, Hudson’s skin burned hot, even as a wave of sorrow rose in his chest. He found himself asking something that felt entirely out of place for the moment.

“Ms. Crawford, if I did ask you directly, would you actually tell me the truth?”

There was no suspicion in his voice, only a quiet grief.

“When I was a cub, I stood among my white, fluffy brothers and listened to my parents tell us we were all their ‘good little boys.’ I believed them. But whenever a holiday came around, my brothers were given prime cuts of meat, while I was left with bones and wild greens.”

Hudson whispered that, back then, the neglect hadn’t even been the worst part. The real blow didn’t come until his parents decided to get rid of him.

When Hudson was only six, they took him deep into the wilderness on a hunting trip. They waited until he was exhausted and fell asleep, then they simply left him behind.

“I walked for two days and two nights on bare feet to find my way home. When I finally arrived, I saw the look of utter disappointment on their faces… even as they told me how worried they’d been.”

Hearing this, Annelise felt a sharp, twisting pang in her chest. She let go of his tail and pulled him into a tight embrace, pressing her cheek against his feverish chest.

“I would never do that to you,” she promised. “I’m not someone who overthinks or ties myself in emotional knots. You might not fully understand yet, but the point is: I have never once thought about abandoning you. I would never discard you while pretending I still wanted you.”

She added, “Look at Evan-he didn’t love me, so I let him go. It’s the same for you. If you’re only here because you need a place to stay and don’t actually feel anything for me, I’ll let you

go too.”

Hudson struggled to sit up.

my favorite “No! That’s not it, Ms. Crawford. In the beginning, I thought that as long as you didn’t hit me, that would be enough. The moment you stopped hitting me, you became matriarch in the world.”

His voice wavered as he continued. “But then I got greedy. I realized that wasn’t enough anymore. I want to talk to you. I want to see you every single day. It feels like you’ve become a completely different person, and now I find myself wanting to tell you everything-to stay by your side for as long as I possibly can.”

Annelise’s breath caught as the weight of his words sank in.

“You mean… you like me more since I changed?”

Hudson shook his head. “Before you changed, I was only ever afraid of you. There was no love then. But now, I’ve become the jealous mate. I’ve started wanting to keep you all to myself.”

A surge of genuine joy rushed through Annelise. She pulled Hudson into an even tighter embrace.

“You really do love me,” she whispered, emphasizing the word “me”.

She had been worried Hudson might still be attached to the original host, or that he mistook having a stable home for love. Now, she finally felt relieved. He hadn’t confused atitude with affection.

“No matter how many times you ask me, I’ll tell you the same thing: you are not a replacement for Snowball,” she promised. “White fur, red fur, even gold fur-none of that matters to me. Beauty isn’t about the color of a coat. It’s because you are you. You’re one of a kind.”

With that, Annelise leaned in and pressed her lips to Hudson’s.

As the kiss deepened, Hudson found a sudden surge of strength. He sat up, reversing their positions to pull Annelise into his own arms, returning the kiss with a desperate, mounting hunger.

In the heat of the moment, Annelise felt something firm and unmistakable pressing against

her.

“Mm… little fox? What’s… what’s this?”

“No, no! It’s nothing. I’m fine!” he stammered, his voice thick with embarrassment. “Just leave it be. I don’t want us to mate just for the sake of treatment. I want you to really love me. To really

want me.”
