Reborn As A Beast Queen with Too Many Husbands to Pet novel Chapter 78

Chapter 78 A Brand-New Gift

A wave of bitter regret washed over Annelise. The original host hadn’t given Hudson anything worth keeping.

She unfastened the bells and found a sharp stone nearby. She began to etch her name into the metal but paused-the original host had been named Annelise too.

After a moment’s thought, she carefully etched “Hudson” next to it, and between the two names, she carved a small, slightly lopsided heart.

Only then did the tightness in her chest begin to ease.

“Here,” she said. “Now, if you wear this bell again, it’s a brand-new gift from me.”

Hudson’s fox eyes widened in disbelief. He had only ever seen the names of great tribal chiefs etched into the sacred stone walls of his village. He had never dreamed that his name could sit alongside Annelise’s like this.

Did that mean he actually mattered to her?

“New… with both our names?” he whispered.

“That’s right,” she replied with a radiant smile. “It’s a promise that we’ll be together for a long, long time.”

Hudson felt like his face was going to spontaneously combust-and that wasn’t the only part of him reaching its boiling point.

He tugged the quilt tighter, trying desperately to hide his reaction, but his two massive, fluffy tails had a mind of their own. They lashed back and forth restlessly, one moment coiling around Annelise’s waist, the next brushing against her legs.

Hudson was losing the battle for self-control. If he grabbed his tails to keep them still, he’d have to let go of the quilt and expose his condition. If he held the quilt, his tails shamelessly continued to seek Annelise out.

Annelise could see exactly what was happening. He was at his breaking point. If they didn’t complete the mating bond soon, the pent-up energy of his heat might actually make him ill.

Besides, the room was now thick with the intoxicating scent of Datura, even Annelise was starting to feel the heat. It was so strong she was certain the scent had drifted outside the room by now.

“Little fox,” she murmured, “your scent is very unique. It smells wonderful.”

“Uh… thank you,” Hudson stammered, unable to meet her gaze.

His fox cars stood straight up, twitching uncontrollably. Annelise found the sight so endearing she couldn’t help herself and reached out to touch them, but his ears seemed to have eyes their own, darting away from her fingers.

In a fit of playful frustration, Annelise leaned forward and nipped at one of those fuzzy ears.

Hudson nearly jumped out of his skin.

“Ah!”

A gasp escaped his throat as both tails instantly whipped around and locked firmly onto Annelise’s waist. His entire body trembled, his chest heaving with every breath, and those seductive fox eyes were now clouded with undisguised desire.

“Ms. Crawford… how could you bite my ears…’

His ears and tails were his most sensitive points. The last thread of Hudson’s restraint finally snapped.

He reached out, his hand sliding around Annelise’s waist, and pulled her off her feet and into his arms. Their eyes met for only a split second before Hudson hauled her onto the bed.

He pressed his lips tentatively against her neck, the memory of the bite he’d once given her lingering like a shadow. Then he held her carefully, elbows braced on the mattress on either side, caging her beneath him.

“Ms. Crawford,” he whispered, “you shouldn’t have bitten my ears. I won’t be able to control myself now.”

Annelise felt a bead of sweat roll down her temple. She reached up, wrapping her arms around his neck with a smile. “With your scent filling the room like this, did you really think I could just go to sleep as if nothing was happening?”

Hudson’s eyes went wide, then softened into a watery, vulnerable gaze. “Then you have to… you have to be doing this because you love me.”

“You big dummy,” she laughed softly. “I’ve loved you since the moment you sucked the poison out of my wound. I’m not made of stone. I know who cares for me and who doesn’t. You can’t expect to give me all your devotion and then forbid me from loving you back.”

If it weren’t for her genuine feelings, Annelise wouldn’t have been able to go through with this.

She knew that in the shifter world, mating was often just a means of reproduction, but she couldn’t live like that. For her, it had to be love. She could adapt to the customs of this world- even the idea of having multiple mates-but she would never devalue herself or the men by making it a clinical transaction.

I’m definitely going to need to get some bed curtains, she thought distractedly.

As they moved together, the bells on Hudson’s ankles chimed with every shift and turn, adding a rhythmic melody to the air.

Hudson cupped her face in his hands, tears of joy streaming down his cheeks as he kissed her.
