Chapter 79 A Bullseye on the First Try
Hearing him recount the details so plainly, Annelise couldn’t help the heat rushing to her face.
“Stop. Just don’t say another word.”
“Oh right, my bad!”
Hudson reached out, intending to massage her back, but he paused mid-motion. He realized with a pang of guilt that his hands were exactly what had caused her pain the night before. Her wrists were already mottled with dark bruises.
He clearly didn’t have a gentle bone in his body-not like Evan. His eyes clouded with apolo
But then, a thought struck him. He didn’t just have hands. He had two tails.
He extended his tails. One he tucked into her arms for her to cuddle, while the other began to roll gently across her sore back.
“Is this pressure okay, Ms. Crawford?”
Annelise buried her face in the plush, silky fur of his tail. “A little firmer on the lower back,” she murmured into the fluff.
“You got it.”
As he worked, Annelise rolled from her belly onto her side to face him. When her rumpled clothes shifted with the movement, a small, vivid blue mark became visible just above her navel.
Hudson froze. He couldn’t believe his eyes.
“This… this… Ms. Crawford, don’t move! Stay right there!”
Startled by the sudden intensity in his voice, Annelise tensed up. “What? What is it?”
Hudson scrambled off the bed and crouched on the floor, resting his paws on the edge of the mattress and tucking his chin over them as he stared intently at her belly.
“Ms. Crawford… you… we…”
“What’s going on?” Annelise grew nervous.
His fox cars trembled with excitement. He quickly wrapped one of his large tails around her

waist.
“We’re having a cub!”
The words burst out of him, and he felt so overwhelmed that tears threatened to spill.
Just moments ago, the sensation of her stroking his tail had started to stir his desire again. It felt like no matter how many times they mated, it would never be enough. Even marking her entire body with his Datura scent didn’t feel like enough to make her truly his.
He lived with a nagging insecurity, especially since she held the power of their bonding. She could sever their bond and discard him whenever she chose.
But seeing that mark changed everything. The lust vanished, replaced by an overwhelming warmth. His mind raced with a single, joyous thought: I’m going to be a father!
Annelise blinked, stunned. “Wait, already? But I don’t feel any different.”
“You won’t feel it,” Hudson explained, his eyes shining. “Even when the cub is ready to come out, you won’t feel a thing. After that, it’s my job as the father to take over and handle all the caretaking!”
Overjoyed, he leaned forward. His lips-no longer burning with the fever of heat, but soft with affection-pressed a tender kiss against the blue mark on her belly.
Annelise still didn’t quite grasp the biology of this shifter world. Then again, “science” didn’t really seem to apply to a land populated by gorgeous men with animal tails.
“So what do I need to do?” she asked.
Hudson shook his head. “Nothing. Just don’t overexert yourself for the next ten days. That’s all.”
Before she could ask anything else, he bolted out of the room. She watched him go, completely bewildered as to where he was rushing off to in such a hurry.
After a while, Hudson returned-not only was he still half-dressed and disheveled, but he had dragged Evan along with him.
“Evan, look! My parents never taught me anything when I was young, and I’ve only heard stories about the blue and red marks. Please help me check it. Is this the mark for a cub?”
Annelise felt a wave of bashful heat rise to her cheeks. She knew Hudson and Evan were close, but was their bond this close?

She instinctively reached to pull the quilt over herself, but as she moved, she realized she was already dressed and felt remarkably clean.
It dawned on her that Hudson must have stayed awake all night caring for her, ensuring she was comfortable and helping her into fresh clothes, leaving only her belly exposed now so he could check the mark.
