Adrian thought, Hah, that old story from my tribe really came true-the one about crying wolf. I hyped it too many times before. Now, when I warn them, no one believes me.
That night, Annelise slept deeply.
Just as the High Priest had predicted, Hudson’s fluffy tail had grown a third one.
Annelise, a die-hard fluff enthusiast, was thrilled. One tail wrapped around her waist, another acted as a quilt, and the third served as a cuddle pillow.
Hudson stayed at her side, massaging her calves one moment, kneading her shoulders the
next.
“Ms. Crawford, if you need anything, just tell me
Annelise teased him, lightly nipping the tip of his tail.
His body went rigid, and his fiery red fox ears trembled. The heat was already spent, so biting his tail didn’t spark mating instincts. Mostly, his lower back felt sore and stiff.
Blushing, he said, “Ms. Crawford, you can bite, but could you not bite all three? I don’t feel so good.”
He quickly backpedaled.
“Forget it. If you like it, that’s what matters. I’m only a tiny bit uncomfortable. I can handle it.”
Annelise knew he always put her first. Seeing him blush made her chest ache. She stopped teasing and scooted into his arms.
“Little fox, you really want to hold me, huh?”
“Yes. I want you in my arms so I can hold you all night.”
The moment he said it, he snapped his head and shook it. Oh crap-did I just say that out loud?
He hurried to clarify.
“No. Whatever you want is what I want. If you don’t like something, neither do I. You always come first.

When the cub is born, I’ll take care of it. Someone else can stay with you at night. As long as I have a little fox cub, I’m content.”
Annelise stroked his head, smiling. Out of all her mates, Hudson was the sweetest, silliest. most endearing-so sweet it hurt.
She patted his tails, signaling him to loosen his hold, then settled into his lap.
“Alright. Tonight, my blanket is your three tails.”
“Ms. Crawford, you’re so good to me.”
Hudson lowered his head and kissed her forehead, his three large, fluffy tails draping over her. With that, there was no way Annelise could sleep poorly that night.
The next day, Snowball didn’t appear.
Adrian found it odd. He tucked his hands close and muttered, “Why didn’t he come? After the way he talked to me yesterday, he should be here today for sure.”
Evan, off to the side, said coolly, “Sounds like wishful thinking.”
“No way! He is definitely planning something big.”
Adrian whispered, half-covering his face.
Evan scoffed. “Why don’t you say it louder?”
“I can’t. If Ms. Crawford hears, she’ll think I’m talking nonsense and won’t treat me again.”
Evan nodded. So he understands.
Then came urgent pounding at the door.
“Annelise! Open up, quick!”
Adrian and Evan hurried over. It was Elder Clariona, sweat beading on his forehead despite the bitter cold. Even the High Priest had come out.
Adrian opened the door. Elder Clariona pushed in. “Tell Annelise to see my son! He’s burning up. I don’t dare go to the shaman. After last time I’m scared he’ll call my son a juuki again and have him sacrificed or burned!”
“Huh? He’s sick?”

In the other world, Snowball had been a little dog with a congenital heart condition. Here. using Cadogo’s body, she didn’t know if it would flare up again.
“I’m going.”
Adrian frowned. “Ms. Crawford, you’re carrying cub.”
“This won’t delay anything. I’m not going hunting.”
Hudson added, “Then I’ll go with you. Since you’re carrying a cub, I should be with you wherever you go.”
Annelise told Adrian and the others to stay home. Hudson didn’t need to come either.
Worried he’d misunderstand, she added, “You barely slept last night. You went to bed later than me and woke up before dawn to make breakfast. If you come with me, you’ll wear yourself out.”
“But Ms. Crawford, when a matriarch is pregnant, her mate has to protect her and the cub.”
Rules are rigid. People aren’t, Annelise thought.
“I’ll be back quickly. I’m just saying-if you get sick from exhaustion, how will you take care of the cub in nine days?”
Hudson’s eyes flicked, suddenly understanding.
