The High Priest spoke up, “I’ll go with you. That should keep things safe. I also want to see her medical skills. She even knocked that caged beast out with needles-I’m curious how she treats other illnesses.”

Annelise rolled her eyes.

With the High Priest accompanying them, Hudson finally relaxed. She also told him to rest while he could.

Annelise then followed Elder Clariona back to her home.

She had only three mates. The reason for so few was that she had been injured in youth and couldn’t produce cubs. Some of her earliest mates couldn’t handle it, broke the bond, and left. The three remaining truly loved her.

“Snowball-no, when did Cadogo start burning up?”

“I called him to eat this morning, but he wouldn’t get up. Yesterday, he brought back a ton of eggs and wild greens from you. I figured he had eaten enough last night, so I didn’t worry. But when I walked in, he was burning up like a furnace.”

Annelise knew words alone weren’t enough. She went to a small room to see Snowball herself.

Snowball shook his head. “It’s the middle of the night. I must’ve fallen asleep and forgot to close the window.”

Outside, someone was quietly watching. Adrian had snuck out, despite Evan telling him not. to. He waved him off before leaving. “No way I’m missing this. That little wolf might be trying some new trick to become a mate.”

Snowball twitched under the needles. At first, he held back his coughs. Then the coughing worsened.

Elder Clariona handed him a bowl of ice-cold water. Annelise knew it would be too harsh for his lungs. These shifters didn’t seem to care much about temperature-so long as the water wasn’t frozen, it was fine.

Snowball coughed violently, so much that the needles nearly fell out. Ignoring the temperature, he grabbed the bowl and drank.

Annelise snapped, “Don’t!”

It was too late. Two swallows triggered another brutal coughing fit, tears spilling from his eyes. She couldn’t continue needling with his bolly shaking so much-it was too risky.

Suddenly, he slumped into her arms, clutching her collar. “Anneliese, am I going to die again? I don’t want to leave you.”

Annelise soothed him. “You won’t. It’s just a chill Don’t say that.”

She pinched a needle and inserted it into the back of his neck. His vision blurred and his body weakened, but he clung to her hand, eyes shimmering with tears.

Annelise stroked his hair. “Sleep. I promise, when you wake, I’ll be right here.”

“You promise.”

“I promise.”

Snowball slowly closed his eyes. His breathing evened out.
