“Where are you going?” she asked in a tiny voice, grabbing his hand as soon as she sensed

him trying to move.

One look at her puffy, red eyes made Damien’s heart ache. His expression softened.

He reached out, gently ruffling her hair, voice low and soothing. “Silly girl, I’m just going

downstairs to grab some ice for your eyes. They’ve swollen up from crying.”

“Then I wanna come too,” Amelia mumbled, eyes watery and pitiful.

Damien gave in immediately, helpless against her plea. “Alright.”

So Amelia clung to his hand like a lost kid afraid of being left behind, refusing to let go. She

followed closely behind him, as if that was enough to make sure he wouldn’t disappear

again.

Damien wrapped some ice in a towel and gently pressed it to her eyes.

“Does it hurt?”

Amelia shut her eyes, looking relaxed. The cold felt nice against her lids. “No, not at all.”

Once they were done, her eyes felt way better. Only then did she realize how rough Damien

actually looked–his face smeared with dried blood, and his clothes torn up like he’d been

through hell.

But even under all that mess, he still looked unbelievably good. Kind of that rugged, battered

charm…

Still, Amelia’s eyes started to turn red again. It was clear he’d really gone through hell just to

make it back to her.

Damien sighed, trying to lighten the mood. “Crying again? What are you made of, water?” He

chuckled, but inside, he was breaking.
