Reborn to Dodge the Bad Marriage novel Chapter 103

Chapter 103 No Invitation

Coe turned around. “Ms. Sinclair, you know them?”

Nora gave her arm a tug. “I do. It’s fine. Go on home.”

Chloe looked at the two of them in black, at the muscle in their bare arms, and decided they weren’t men anyone should push.

She lowered her voice. “Let me come with you. They look mean. If something happens, I can’t fight them off, but I can call the police.”

Her face was so wary that Nora nearly laughed. “You don’t need to come. If you’re that worried, text me every half hour. If I don’t answer, then call.”

That made sense to Chloe. “Okay.”

Nora went with the two bodyguards, and nobody said a word the whole way.

Partway there, Julian texted her. “Still busy?”

“Yeah.”

“I’m in a meeting myself,” he wrote.

A photo came through right after it, Julian at the head of a conference table in a black suit, his face hard, his eyes flat on the executive running through the project.

Even through a photo, the cold coming off him was enough to fill a room.

Nora looked at it a beat longer. Okay. He does look good running a room.

Did he take that on purpose, just so I’d see it? She didn’t write back.

Half an hour later, the car stopped.

Nora looked out at the street and frowned hard. “This isn’t the Blithe place, is it?”

There was no sign of Cordelia either.

One of the bodyguards opened her door. “This is a hotel, Ms. Sinclair. Please step out.”

Nora looked up at the Wyndmere, every inch of it expensive, and said nothing.

She went in first, and the two of them fell in behind her.

“Your invitation, ma’am?” The attendant at the door smiled and put out a hand.

“Invitation?” Nora’s voice stayed even. “I don’t have one.”

“Oh.” The attendant looked pained. “I’m sorry, but nobody gets in without one.”

Nora took that with a small nod, turned, and walked off.

Chapter 103 No Invitation

The other guests coming in for the auction turned to look, and none of the looks were kind.

“Aerce auction, and she shows up with no invitation?”

“Who is that? I’ve never seen her. Anyone know whose daughter she is?”

“No idea. As pretty as she is, she’s probably not here for the auction. Maybe she’s interviewing to work the

door.”

“Or not. Look at her. The room’s full of money tonight, so she could be here shopping for a sugar daddy

All of it carried far enough for Nora to hear.

“Ms. Sinclair, we have invitations.”

The bodyguard stepped in front of her then and held out the invitations.

Nora looked at the plain card and let out a short laugh. “Take it in yourself. I’m not going.”

The bodyguard blinked. “Dr. Blithe wants to see you.”

Nora’s smile cooled. “If she wants to see me, she can come out here and see me. What does she think she is, royalty? She sends for me and I’m supposed to come running?

“If Cordelia is the one who wants me here, then show me some good faith. You had the invitations in your pocket the whole time and kept them there so I’d stand out here and look like a fool?”

“Ms. Sinclair-”

Nora cut him off, her voice cold. “You let everyone out here think I’m applying for a job, or hunting for a sugar daddy. So what does that make Cordelia, the one who sent for me? My pimp?”

She hadn’t raised her voice, but it carried far enough for everyone nearby to catch it.

Expressions changed all around them.

“Dr. Blithe invited her?”

“Can’t be. She just used her name straight out, no title, nothing.”

Nora didn’t care what any of them said. She started walking.

But the bodyguard put an arm out to stop her again. “I apologize. I should have handed it over sooner. You can go in now, Ms. Sinclair.”

“Now I’m in a bad mood and I don’t want to see her. You can keep it.” Nora tore the invitation to pieces.

“If Cordelia wants to see me that badly, she can come see me herself.”

Nora turned to go, and the bodyguard blocked her again, harder this time. “Ms. Sinclair. Inside. Please.”

So the attendant asking for an invitation had only ever been a way to humiliate her.

laughed at that, short and cold, and stepped around him.
