Reborn to Dodge the Bad Marriage novel Chapter 104

Chapter 104 Ten Minutes to Apologize

Adrian’s floor manager only knew part of what had happened, and not the part that mattered.

Mandy’s eyebrows went up the second she heard it, proud of herself, and she turned to Nora with a look of pretend annoyance. “You should have told me you wanted to come, Nora. This is Ace’s hotel. I have invitations coming out of my ears.

“This is all my fault. I didn’t know you were interested in any of this, or I’d have sent you one and saved you

the scene out here.”

Mandy could have laughed out loud. Nora had married Julian, which made her the wife of the richest man in the country, and she still couldn’t get through the door of an auction.

Ha. Her fall came earlier this time. I should have gotten here sooner so I could watch all of it.

Adrian turned to the manager. “We know each other. She’s Mandy’s sister. From now on she doesn’t need an invitation to come in here.”

The floor manager apologized fast. “I’m sorry, Ms. Sinclair. That was our mistake.”

Mandy looked over at her. “It’s fine now, Nora. Come in with us.

“Why did you come alone, anyway? Where’s Julian? How come he isn’t with you?”

There was no mistaking how much she enjoyed asking it.

Nora gave the two of them a flat look. “I’ve lost interest. You go ahead.”

Mandy’s mouth pulled down. “Nora, this was a misunderstanding. You’re the one who turned up without an invitation, and now we’re offering to walk you in, and you’re still throwing a fit?”

Somebody in the crowd spoke up. “She’s your sister? She’s got a temper on her.”

“She tore up an invitation a minute ago. Said Dr. Blithe was the one who wanted to see her.”

Mandy smiled, apologetic. “Sorry, everyone. She’s been like this since we were kids. You get used to her.”

“Two sisters, and they’re that different? And the nerve of it, claiming Dr. Blithe sent for her. If that were true, wouldn’t she have an invitation?”

Nora’s mouth twisted. “Because she’s the illegitimate one. Our father’s mistress had her. Did you expect her to turn out like me?”

Mandy’s face changed, and the act fell apart. “Nora Sinclair!”

Adrian put an arm around her shoulders and talked her down. “Don’t let her get to you.”

He looked at Nora. “Are you still coming in? The auction starts soon.”

She kept her eyes on her phone and didn’t bother looking up. “No.”

Seeing Cordelia had never been her idea. They’d dragged her out here and then set her up to be humiliated.

They really think I’m easy to push around.

She turned to the bodyguard with the split, swelling face. “Tell Cordelia she has 10 minutes to come down here, apologize, and explain herself. Otherwise tonight’s auction is cancelled.”

Mandy laughed out loud. “Nora, Ace is the one hosting tonight. If you want it cancelled, shouldn’t you ask him first?”

Nora didn’t lift her head from the screen. “Mandy, I’m not looking for a fight with you today. Keep quie

Mandy’s smile went cold. “Fine. You love the act, so I’ll stand right here and watch you cancel an auction.

She turned to Adrian. “Ace, don’t call it off for my sake. I’m not going to take my family’s side just because they’re family.”

He watched Nora. Her head stayed down, her fingers moving fast across the screen, and he had no idea what she was working on.

Her mouth was set in a hard line, and he couldn’t make himself look anywhere else.

Mandy caught him staring at her again and set her teeth. “Ace!”

Adrian came back to himself and pulled his eyes away. He looked down at her then, indulgent. “All right. I’ll do whatever you say.”

He wanted to watch Nora run out of options and come to him.

I want to hear her ask me for it.

The smile came back to Mandy’s face, and she made sure Nora got a good look at it, every bit of it bragging about how much Adrian spoiled her.

But Nora didn’t glance at her once. She stayed bent over her phone, typing.

Upstairs, in the hotel’s best private suite, Cordelia heard what the bodyguard reported back and let out a scornful laugh. “She really thinks she’s somebody. It’s pathetic.”

Cancel the auction, no less. That was funnier still.

She sent the answer back down. “If she doesn’t want to see me, let her go.”

She’d had nothing important to say in the first place. The summons had only ever been about one thing. making the point that old money came with its own pecking order.

Nora needed to learn where she stood and keep her head down around Cordelia and Olivia from now on.

Down at the doors, the bodyguard got his answer and turned to pass it along. “Dr. Blithe is busy. She has no time to see you, Ms. Sinclair. You’re free to go.”

Nora raised an eyebrow at him. “You’re sure?”

“I’m sure.”
