Reborn to Dodge the Bad Marriage novel Chapter 124

Chapter 124 Just a Business Partner

Once they were in the car, Julian handed her his phone, and there it was, the study footage of her lifting the Orion file out of the drawer.

Nora watched it through. Every move she’d made was in his hands.

She looked up at him. “If you knew I’d take it, why have Miles bring the proposal home? And why cover for me with Grandma about the camera?”

So that was why he hadn’t brought the proposal home himself, and then called Miles to bring it over later. and why she’d found it in the study so easily.

Julian had known she’d come for it and had it waiting. It might have been to get proof of her taking it.

He looked at her. “Sienna told me you were going to steal the Orion file. I didn’t believe her.

“Then you happened to ask me what I thought of Orion, so I had Miles bring the proposal home. I wanted to see how much of you was real.

“And you took it.” His eyes stayed on her. “Nora, give me a reason.”

Nora didn’t go straight to the explanation. She held his eyes instead. “Julian, do you believe me?”

It was almost a pointless question.

She’d seen him from the moment he walked into that hotel lobby, and she’d heard him knock Sienna back every single time, believing her from start to finish.

But all of that was believing she wouldn’t sleep with Trevor.

How far the rest of it went, she had no idea.

Julian looked into those wide eyes and found nothing but cold, clear distance, and he looked away, not brave enough to hold it, afraid of what more he’d find there.

“I believe you had a reason for taking it, and that you weren’t out to hurt the Westons. Say it.”

Nora watched him turn his face away and refuse to meet her eyes, which meant he didn’t believe her.

She laughed at that inwardly, then said, “I don’t want you bidding on Orion. It looks like a project with a future, but there’s a great deal wrong with it…”

Nora laid out the basic problems with Orion. It was approved now, but a change of leadership would freeze it before long and leave it half built and abandoned.

When she finished, she looked up at him. “You’ve seen it too, haven’t you? Loreth is setting everyone else up to hold the bag. It looks like money coming in, and the losses will run deeper than anything it earns.

“And because you already knew, you used the Orion file to test me. Didn’t you?”

Julian was the Weston heir. If he couldn’t see through Orion, he’d never be able to hold the family up.

He knew, and he’d used Orion to find out how loyal she was.

an didn’t deny it. “Nora…”

She raised a hand to stop him. “There’s no need to explain, Mr. Weston. Testing me was the right, call. We’re partners in an arrangement, after all.

“If we’re lucky and you live, we can divorce and I take half of everything.

“If we’re unlucky and you die, then of course you need to know whether I can run a business/Without a tes how could you hand the Westons to me and rest easy?”

The distance in her went straight through Julian, and the line between his brows cut deeper.

Nora gave him a polite smile. “Don’t worry, Mr. Weston. I have very good professional ethics. I’ll look after the Westons, and you don’t need to worry about me turning on you.

“All of that rests on my getting my share of the Weston money. There’s nothing personal in it and no feelings in it, so when Grandma told me to let tonight go, I let it go.”

Julian’s eyes cooled. “Nothing personal. No feelings. Is that how it is with me too?”

Nora looked at him without flinching, still smiling. “Yes, Mr. Weston. We said it before we married. You don’t have feelings for me, and I won’t have any for you.

“I like the arrangement exactly as it is. There’s no need for you to feel guilty about it either. Think of me as an employee.”

Julian held her eyes, and she held his right back without any trouble at all, and there wasn’t a trace of feeling

in them.

Then, he leaned in toward her.

Nora went to move away, and in a car there was nowhere to go.

Julian put an arm around her waist and held her there, then leaned in close to her ear and said her name low. “Nora.”

His breath came warm against her skin, and it burned like a spark landing.

Nora put a hand up at her ear, blocking his mouth, and her voice came out cool. “Don’t harass your business partner, Mr. Weston. It’s against the rules.”

“You don’t feel anything at all?” Julian turned his head slightly and looked at her face, which hadn’t gone the least bit pink.

Nora’s voice stayed cool. “My heart is certainly moving. Only dead people have hearts that don’t.”

“Nora!” There was temper in it now.

She turned her head a little to look at him. “You don’t believe me, Mr. Weston? Feel it for yourself, then.”
