Chapter 141 What Grandma Saw
Nara thought about it. She’d been the only one throwing punches the whole time. He’d given ground and stayed out of the way until there was no hallway left and he had to pin her.
She turned her head. “If you hadn’t been sitting in the dark like a man about to kill somebody, waiting to interrogate me, I wouldn’t have felt any of that and I wouldn’t have walked out.”
If he’d turned on one light, none of it would have set her off.
“And then you came after me and grabbed my wrist and dragged me. Who else was I supposed to hit?”
All of it had been instinct, straight off the danger.
Now it’s my fault?
Julian pointed at the top of the stairs. “If I hadn’t pulled you along, we’d have been fighting right there. Weren’t you worried one of us would go down them?”
Nora glanced at the stairs, went quiet, and turned her head away. “You should have turned a light on, that’s
all.”
“Fine. It’s all my fault. I’m sorry. I’ll leave a light on for you from now on.”
There was something helpless in the way he said it, and something indulgent under that. The apology came out so seriously that it left her uncomfortable.
After all, some of it was on her.
But she couldn’t quite make herself say so.
Then, footsteps came down the stairs.
Julian touched the blood at his throat and got Nora back against the wall fast, then leaned in close to her ear. “My grandmother is coming.”
She went stiff and stayed where she was. If Constance found out she’d put a hole in his throat, it wouldn’t go
well.
For her, Julian came before everything.
“Julian, the staff said you and Nora were fight-”
Constance had come hurrying down worried about a fight. What she found at the end of the hallway was the two of them pressed together against a wall, and the rest of the sentence died in her mouth.
Julian heard her and turned around fast, pulling his collar up. “Grandma.” It came out embarrassed.
Nora stayed tucked behind him.
To Constance, that only made it look shyer.
Every bit of worry went off her face and the smile came up. “I’m old. I sleepwalk. I didn’t see a thing, I didn’t

turned, took Bess’s arm, and went back upstairs faster than she’d come down, so as not to put them off.
Bess kept hold of her arm. “Ma’am, is that good for Mr. Weston, in his condition?
“Ms. Blithe said he still has to stay off sex for now.”
Constance thought about what she’d just seen and smiled.. “It’s rare for Julian to want anything at all. I’ve decided to take a wider view of it. I can’t put everything on curing him.
“If…” She stopped there and made herself look at the worst of it. “If he can’t be cured, then a child with Nora before he goes, so the line carries on, would be worth having.”
The change in her surprised Bess. “You don’t have to be that grim about it, ma’am. Ms. Blithe is a fine doctor. She’ll cure him.”
Constance had already moved past that. “You plan for both. If he can’t be cured, so be it, but if Nora has a child, then a great-grandchild is still a grandchild to me.”
Bess said nothing more. She kept her eyes down and walked her back to her room.
Up on Mount Elden, in the middle of treating the injured, Olivia had stepped aside to take a call. “Jules and Nora weren’t fighting?
“They were just being affectionate at the end of a hallway?
“No fight, then. That’s good. Somebody should still be careful about his condition.
“All right. I have to get back to it. There are a lot of injured people here.”
Olivia got off the call after a few words, and then she thought about Jules, cool and remote and untouchable, the last man anyone would dare put a hand on, pressed up against a wall with Nora.
She couldn’t even picture it, and she set her teeth and said it out loud. “Is she that desperate? She has no shame. She’s filthy!”
Sienna came over in time to hear it and was taken aback. “Olivia, who are you swearing at?”
As far as she knew, Olivia was the picture of a well-bred, composed heiress. Calling anybody filthy was unthinkable. She barely even raised her voice.
It turned everything Sienna thought about her upside down.
Olivia panicked about the damage for a second and then steadied. “I heard this whole pileup started because some couple was fooling around in a car.
“They hurt this many people, so I couldn’t help myself. Sorry you had to see that.”
Sienna believed it and started swearing along with her.
