Chapter 140 The Hairpin

Fan-Met

Judan’s voice came cold behind her. It only made the danger feel worse, and the disgust came up with it,

and she walked faster.

As she went, her previous life came back to her, coming home to Adrian and his questions, one after another.

“Who was that man?

“Why were you standing that close to him?

“Nora, aren’t I the only one you love?

“Nora, don’t walk away. I said don’t walk away!”

Her head filled with Adrian catching her by the hair, dragging her back into the room, pulling the blackout curtains shut, and then hitting her…

“Nora!”

She was still moving fast when a hand closed on her wrist, and she turned on instinct and went for whoever had hold of her.

Julian had barely caught her wrist before a fist came at his face. He turned his head out of the way and pulled her along with him.

But Nora brought a foot up and kicked at him.

Julian let go fast, blocked the kick with his arm, and gave ground a step.

Her eyes stayed cold. Her fists came up, and she went at him, pushing him back down the hallway.

There was one thought in her head. Adrian in her previous life or Julian in this one, nobody was ever hitting her again!

I get there first.

Julian was afraid of hurting her, so he didn’t hit back. He blocked and gave ground.

But she came at him as though she had nothing to lose, and he ran out of hallway, and in the end he had to move. He caught her arm as fast as he could and put a hand on her shoulder.

In a second, he had her against the wall, leaning over her, and it came out through his teeth. “Nora Sin-”

He didn’t get the rest out. Something sharp was already against his throat.

Nora looked up at him, cold. “Mr. Weston, try anything else and I don’t mind being widowed early.”

She liked to pin her hair up with a hairpin, because in a bad moment it was the handiest weapon she had.

Julian looked down at her hair, loose around her shoulders now, and knew exactly what the hairpin against his throat was.

She looked ready to kill him, and it pulled a laugh out of him. “Nora, which one of us has been out

sbehaving? Hm?”

Nora looked back at him, cold. “I haven’t.”

“You haven’t?” Julian looked at her forehead and leaned in closer.

She felt him come closer and pushed the hairpin harder. warning him, cold. “Don’t move!”

He stopped for barely a second and then kept coming, even when the point went into his skin.

The point broke the skin and a bead of blood came up, and he still didn’t stop. “Then what was that kiss for luck with Ryder Kane?” he asked, low.

Her hand didn’t waver either, and she looked at him with nothing in her face. “Exactly what it looked like Come any closer and I really will kill you and free up the line on my marriage certificate.”

“Ha.” It pulled another laugh out of him, and he stopped pushing and looked at her. “You’re my wife, and another man put his mouth on your forehead. Don’t you owe me an explanation?”

“There’s nothing to explain.” Nora’s laugh was cold. “And if I explained, would you believe me?”

When Mandy fell down as a child and said she’d been pushed, their father had never believed her.

When a classmate accused her of stealing at school, not one teacher or student had believed her.

In her previous life, she’d explained herself to Adrian until her voice gave out, and he had never believed

her either.

She’d explained so many times that nobody believed any of it, and eventually she stopped wanting to.

The people who believed her believed her anyway. Rosalind, for one.

Julian looked down at her, steady. “If you don’t explain, how do you know I won’t believe you?”

Nora pressed her lips together and looked up at him without a word.

Julian looked at her. She was his wife, and he should have been staking a claim.

But he looked at the cold in her eyes, at how much of it wanted him dead, at a face with nothing in it but distance and guard.

The cold in his voice eased. “Why does the way other people treat you decide how I’m allowed to treat you?”

Then, his voice came up a fraction. “Wasn’t the way I handled the last one enough to make you trust me?”

He meant that night at the Wyndmere.

Nora thought about that night, and about how Julian had believed her from start to finish and stood in front of her the whole way.

Everything strung tight in her let go at once. She took the hairpin back and saw the blood at his throat. “I’m sorry. That was… too much.”
