Chapter 143 Six in the Morning

Nera glanced at her arm, smiled without a word, and stepped out of the elevator.

Mandy caught that last look, and there was nothing in it but contempt. She stamped her foot. “You wait, You’ll be sorry. I’m going to end up better off than you.”

Nora got to her office and started on everything that had piled up over the last few days.

Signing off on the accounts, sitting through meetings, signing her name…

She didn’t stop all morning, and it was nearly the end of the day before she could breathe,

Nora took a mouthful of bitter coffee. “How are your short videos doing?”

Bridget was a little embarrassed. “The numbers aren’t good. The account is more or less dead. I’m working on a new approach.”

She’d watched what other people wrote for those videos. All of it was overblown, or flatly untrue, characters invented out of nothing, and she couldn’t bring herself to do that yet.

Without the sharp editing and without picking a fight anybody wanted to take sides in, the results were ordinary. She got fewer likes than the retired couples posting flowers they’d passed on the sidewalk.

Nora took that in. Mandy came to mind, and with her Sabrina, the one Mandy had left behind on her way up, with a campaign opposite an actor like Preston.

“Is Sabrina’s jewelry campaign finished? How has she been?”

Bridget’s face did something odd at the name, and she looked as though she wanted to say something and couldn’t.

Nora frowned at her, worried. “What is it? Has something happened to Sabrina?”

Bridget said, “Sabrina told me it’s nothing serious and asked me not to say anything. She doesn’t want to cause the company trouble.”

Nora asked her, “Somebody’s been pushing her around?”

Bridget said nothing, which was an answer.

Nora looked at her, not pleased. “This company is small. If you work for me, you’re mine. If somebody pushes one of you around, then however small it is, it’s a big deal.”

Bridget could see she was angry, and that she really did think of them as hers, so she told her straight.

“Sabrina went in a few days ago to shoot the jewelry campaign, and the client has been making it hard for her on purpose.

“The concept keeps changing. One day the ring is in a cake, the next day it’s in a glass of wine, and it never comes out right, so they shoot it again and again.

“She’s eaten cake until she was sick and drunk wine until she was drunk.

“And then there’s the one where they throw the ring in the water and she has to dive in over and over and

me up wearing it.

“There’s always a new reason to call it. They still haven’t got it, and nobody can stay in the water like that day! after day.”

Anybody could hear that the concept existed to make her suffer. No diamond campaign was ever that crude least of all one from a house the size of Everstone.

Nora was angry now. “Is Sabrina shooting today?”

Bridget nodded. “Today it’s the pool again, the ring at the bottom. They said the morning light is better so she started at six.”

Nora frowned at that. “Six in the morning? The water in an outdoor pool is still cold. Keep that up and she’ll get sick.”

She was on her feet and out the door with her bag before anything else.

Bridget hurried after her. “Ms. Sinclair, where are you going?”

“To stand behind Sabrina!”

Bridget followed her out, and there was something in the air around her, like a woman on her way to burn a place down. It got Bridget’s blood up, and she went after her fast.

At Seacliff Lodge, out by the pool, Sabrina had been going into the water since six that morning, take after take, and every one of them had been called.

The whole set had gone sour, and the impatience with her was in the air.

By eleven, Gus Merrick, who was running the campaign, clapped his hands. “Take a break, everyone. We’ll shoot again after lunch.”

Then, he looked at Sabrina, standing by the pool, and his face set with impatience. “Not you. Don’t go and eat. Stay here and practice on your own. The dive has to look beautiful, and your face has to look urgent without looking forced.

“You’re going in after a diamond ring worth over $1,000,000, not drowning yourself. Is that clear?”

Sabrina stood there dripping and took it, and she nodded. “Understood. I’ll keep practicing.”

Gus was furious. “This was a simple campaign. Half a day of work. Because of you we’ve been at it three or four days.

“Do you know what a location like this costs? Seacliff Lodge is $100,000 a day. Do you know how much of Preston Voss’s time you’ve wasted, and how much of everybody else’s…”

Sabrina kept apologizing. “I’m sorry. I’ll practice properly. I’ll get it in one next time. I’m sorry for the

trouble.”
