Chapter 144 Just an Employee

a looked over as Sabrina dragged herself out of the water and got her shaking legs under her to go in agam.

She crossed the deck fast, caught her by the arm, and held her back.

Sabrina looked up and saw who it was, and the white face broke into a delighted smile. “Ms. Sinclair, what are you doing here?”

Nora saw that she could still smile about it, and she frowned. “No more diving. Come and eat with me.”

Sabrina said it quickly, smiling. “One more. I’m nearly there. Otherwise it’s a waste of time and money, and my name goes with it.”

Nora was angry. “You’re shooting a commercial, not competing in a diving event. And even divers get to dat.

“They’re making it hard for you on purpose. They’re bullying you. Why are you standing here diving like an idiot?”

Sabrina had swallowed it all morning, taking it because it was the job, and then her own boss called her an idiot, and everything in her came apart at once.

“I’m a nobody. I’m a D-list actress who works for you. I don’t come from anything, I don’t have money behind me, and I’m somebody’s employee.

“They’re the client. If they want to make it hard for me, what am I supposed to do except take it? Walk out? Could I pay the penalty on that contract? They could sell me and I still couldn’t pay it!

“I’m not an heiress. I’m not running a company. I’m somebody’s employee, so what else is there except playing dumb and taking it? What else?”

Bridget watched her go on until her voice gave out, and by then she was demanding answers from Nora.

She frowned. “Sabrina, I know you’re in a bad way, but you can’t talk to Ms. Sinclair like that. She heard they were making it hard for you and she came here to stand behind you.”

That stopped Sabrina for a second, and then her eyes went red and the tears came over. “How is she supposed to stand behind me? How do the Sinclairs compare with the Pierces? How does Starfall compare with Everstone?”

She looked at Nora with everything given up in her face. “You can’t fight people like that and win, Ms. Sinclair. Let it go. Please, let it go. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’ve caused you trouble.”

Bridget stood there without a word, and it made her miserable, because Sabrina was right.

They were ordinary people. Nora was their boss, but next to Everstone and the Pierces, in money or in reach, they weren’t anything at all, and that kind of fight was never winnable.

She was a very good boss who would stand up for the people who worked for her, but without the weight behind it, all it did was make trouble.

Even Bridget found herself saying it. “Ms. Sinclair, maybe we should let it go.”

Chapter 144 Just an Employee

Nora hadn’t said anything yet when a voice came across the deck, scolding.

“Saprina, you’re not ready yet. Who told you to take a break?

“How much of everybody’s time and money and energy are you going to waste?”

Finished

Nora looked up at him, a man in a suit with a gut on him like eight months of pregnancy, his hair slicked down with enough product to fry something in…

She frowned. “Who are you?”

Gus looked at how striking she was and found himself stopped by the cold coming off her.

For a second, he stood there guessing, because a woman that beautiful with that much money on her had to be an heiress out of one of the big houses.

So his back bent a little and the smile came on, eager to please. “Good afternoon. I’m the advertising director at Everstone Jewelers, and I’m running this campaign. Gus Merrick.

“And you are…”

Nora answered coolly. “Nora Sinclair.”

“Ah, Ms. Sinclair. The Sinclairs of…” Gus ran through every house that counted and couldn’t place a single Sinclair among them, and the frown came.

The eagerness went out of his voice. “Which Sinclairs? I’ve never heard of a Sinclair family in that class.”

Bridget stepped in fast. “Mr. Merrick, this is the president of Starfall Media.”

That told Gus everything. Nora wasn’t an heiress at all. She was the sister of Mandy, who was Mr. Pierce’s girlfriend, and the two of them didn’t get along.

So there was no reason to be polite.

Gus straightened all the way up with nothing eager left in him, and the smile went official. “What brings you here, Ms. Sinclair?”

He looked at Sabrina, with the tears still on her face. “Have you come down here yourself to tell her off as well? She hasn’t exactly been professional.”

She was afraid of making an enemy of Everstone and bringing real trouble down on the company and on herself, so she said it in a hurry. “Yes. Ms. Sinclair already told me off. I’ll get straight back to practicing, and once you’ve seen it and you’re happy, we can shoot.”

Nora took her by the wrist and turned her head to Bridget. “Get Sabrina a robe first.”

She was still in the white dress, soaked and sticking to her, and not one person had brought her anything to put on.

Sabrina looked at her, worried and almost pleading. “Ms. Sinclair, I’ve rested. I really can shoot.”

Nora looked at Gus, cold. “Are you the one who kept Sabrina from eating and left her out here practicing
