put his head down and apologized. “I’m sorry, Ms. Sinclair. I’m sorry, Sabrina. I shouldn’t have used the job to settle a private score and made things hard for her on purpose. Please forgive me and let it go.”
The result surprised Sabrina, and she didn’t want it getting any bigger either. “Then let’s…”
She never got to the rest of it.
Nora cut her off, cold, and spoke to Gus. “You hurt somebody and an apology settles it?”
Her laugh had no warmth in it. “You’re going to do everything you put Sabrina through. Eleven cakes, five bottles of red wine, and six hours in that water.”
Gus came apart at that. “You’re trying to kill me!”
“Ha.” Nora’s laugh stayed cold. “When you were doing it to Sabrina, you didn’t know it could kill somebody?”
Gus shut his mouth. He’d never thought about any of it. All he’d thought about was making it hard for her.
Nora wasn’t letting him off there either. “And Everstone fires him, so he can’t use the job to settle private scores with anybody else!”
The whole point of apologizing had been to keep the job, and now she’d asked for that too.
Gus shouted at her. “Don’t push it!”
Nora looked at him, perfectly calm. “You don’t have to do it. But I can have you blacklisted in this industry, and I can make this city unlivable for you.”
She couldn’t do that herself yet. Julian and everything the Westons had could.
She’d married him to borrow that weight and save herself 20 years of the long way around, and when it came to protecting her own people, she was going to use it.
Gus opened his mouth to laugh at the idea that she had that kind of reach.
Adrian spoke first, low. “Do it, Mr. Merrick. Otherwise I’ll deal with you the way she just described.”
That stopped him. Adrian was taking Nora’s side again, and she and Mandy were supposed to be at each other’s throats.
He wasn’t taking his own girlfriend’s side. He was taking hers.
Does Mr. Pierce want Nora?
“Well? Would you rather be blacklisted?” Nora asked him, cold.
Gus came back to himself. He didn’t want to be blacklisted, so there was only one answer. “Fine. I’ll do it!”
Nora called over one of the lodge staff and pointed at him. “Bring him 11 of the most expensive cakes you have, and six bottles of red wine at around $100,000 each. He’s taking the pool for the afternoon, and he’s paying. Thank you.”

Gus went white.
The most expensive cakes at Seacliff Lodge ran $30,000 to $50,000 each. Eleven of them came to well over $100,000, and the wine would run $700,000 or $800,000!
Taking the pool would be another $100,000 on top!
That was over $1,000,000 gone, and not on anything he’d enjoy. He’d be paying it to apologize and to punish himself!
It was the worst money he’d ever spent!
Gus wanted to refuse, and then he looked at Nora, and at Adrian, who had already said his piece, and he made himself say it to the staffer. “Just… just bring it.”
Adrian looked at her. “Are you satisfied with that?”
Nora was reasonably satisfied. She looked at him and thought that as long as a woman wasn’t his wife, he could be perfectly reasonable, and to the rest of the world he really was the polished gentleman.
The thought lasted about a second. She could never forget what he had done to her in her previous life.
“It’ll do. But you broke the contract first, and one of your people used the job to hurt my client, so there’s no reason to go on with this.
“Terminate it,” Nora said.
Adrian had assumed that solving the problem would be the end of it, and she still wanted out.
He frowned at her and said it seriously. “That was an accident. It was one employee acting on his own, and I’ve fired him. I’ll bring in a well-known agency to reshoot, and nothing like it will happen again.”
Nora looked at him without any warmth. “Your company is finished as far as I’m concerned. I’m not putting my client anywhere near it.”
Adrian watched her refuse. His voice came down a little, and he sounded patient. “Is it the fee you’re unhappy with? We can sign a new contract, nothing one-sided in it, good for both of us. How does that sound?”
Nora held to it. “I want out.”
Adrian looked at how firmly she held it, and it brought his own temper up. “If you insist on terminating, then you can, as long as the penalty is paid in full.”
He raised a hand, and the assistant who’d come in with him stepped up. “Mr. Pierce.”
Adrian said, “Work out for Ms. Sinclair what terminating without cause costs.”
The assistant pulled up the contract, made a call to a lawyer, and came back with it. “The penalty is $15,000,000.”
Her endorsement fee was $1,000,000, and the penalty on it was $10,000,000.
