Nara got angrier as she said it, and she grabbed the glass beside her and threw it straight at Gus. “I’ll order 11 cakes for you, and a few bottles to go with them. Shall I go easy on you too?”
Gus got out of the way of the glass. It hit the ground and broke, and in dodging he put his foot down on the pieces and yelped.
He turned straight to Adrian, loud about it. “Mr. Pierce, you see how she is. You’re standing right here and she still doesn’t hold back! Make her pay the penalty. Put that company of hers out of business!”
Adrian turned his head and looked at him, perfectly calm. “Are you telling me how to do my job?”
Gus couldn’t see anger in his face, but the calm in it put a chill through him and his neck went down. “I only meant that she has no regard for you.”
Adrian looked at Nora. “If it happened the way you say, I’ll deal with him severely. And if you’ve invented any of it, I’ll use the law to protect my employee.”
It sounded like a reasonable man being reasonable.
Nora only laughed at it, cold. “Mr. Pierce is capable of being reasonable?”
Everyone else described him as warm and polished, the perfect gentleman.
But Nora seemed to know the dark in him, and she came at him with contempt and mockery and nothing
else.
It annoyed him, and it puzzled him. “We barely know each other. You don’t know me. Why would you have that much against me?”
Because she’d seen the worst of him in her previous life!
But Nora only laughed at it. “Because you and Mandy are birds of a feather. Because one small, ugly thing happened and you turned on her and went cold. Because your employees have filthy mouths and use the job to settle private scores. And you…”
She looked straight at him and didn’t hide a bit of what she felt. “What could you possibly be?”
Adrian’s eyes stayed on her, working at it. He didn’t understand what she meant by any of it today.
Maybe she didn’t want him with Mandy.
Or maybe, as her sister, she blamed him for minding what happened that night and pulling away.
Gus and the rest of the staff stared at Nora. Nobody talked to Adrian like that.
That was asking to be buried.
Gus stole a look at Adrian, and the silence pleased him. Nora was about to have it far worse, and it might not stop at Starfall going under.
That would square the splits he’d been put through and the trip into the pool.

After a long silence, Adrian took his eyes off Nora and turned to him. “The 11 cakes, and the bottles of wine.
any of that true?”
Gus blinked. He hadn’t expected that question instead of an explosion in the other direction.
He went a little unsteady and started explaining. “It’s that Sabrina can’t act, that’s why…”
Adrian looked at the calculation working in his face and cut him off. “Lying to me doesn’t work, Mr. Merrick. Where are the shoot files? There were plenty of staff on that set, and every one of them can be pu in front of you.”
Nora looked at him, surprised. He’s actually going to be reasonable?
Gus was suddenly soaked in sweat. “Mr… Mr. Pierce…”
Adrian checked his watch with something like impatience. “I’m busy. If you won’t tell me the truth, then ll find it out, and whatever comes of it is on you.”
Gus heard that and didn’t dare reach for any of his usual lines. He wiped the cold sweat off his forehead and admitted it. “Yes. It’s true.”
The warmth went out of Adrian. “Why? You’re an employee. Who gave you the authority to do any of that?”
He knew exactly why he’d done it.
To make Mandy happy, of course, and to build himself a better future and get a transfer into the Pierce Group. And because he’d taken something for it.
But Gus couldn’t say any of that.
He found a reason fast and turned on Sabrina with everything righteous in his face. “I’m a fan of Celine Voss. Sabrina has no shame. She keeps throwing herself at Preston Voss and wrecking that marriage.”
The color came up in her face. “I have not!”
Gus scoffed. “You haven’t? You used a sugar daddy to get yourself into a wedding-ring campaign with Preston.
“I made it hard for you on purpose so you’d take the hint and give the campaign up. Stay out of my idol’s marriage!”
Sabrina’s eyes went red and the tears stood there. She and Preston had nothing between them, and she’d been branded the other woman and a homewrecker and put through all of it for nothing.
Nora looked up at Adrian. “You heard him. That’s your employee, using the job to push people around!”
He gave her a small nod. “I’m sorry. That’s a failure of management on my part, and it’s caused you trouble. I’ll make it right.”
Nora’s laugh was cold. “Not to me. To Sabrina!”
