a had barely hung up when a knuckle rapped against her window.

She turned her head. Juliati was standing out there. “Come out for a second.”

She got out, still confused, and found a huge bouquet of black roses and a milkshake waiting in front of her.

Nora stared at him. That cold face of his had gone red all the way through, the vein at his temple standing, out, like he had come back from a fight.

“Did you just go buy me flowers and a milkshake?” she asked carefully.

“Mm.” Julian barely got it out. “I heard women like flowers. And these drinks.”

He had ordered a bouquet days ago, but it hadn’t arrived before she did, so he had gone out and bought another one.

He had bought the milkshake because of something he overheard at the flower shop. A girl was telling her friend she had just dumped her boyfriend for taking her on a date and never buying her one.

Julian didn’t really understand it, but apparently a date came with one of those.

His face was still red, so Nora didn’t argue with him. She took the bouquet and smiled. “Thank you. I love

them.”

With the roses filling both arms, there was no good way for her to hold the cup.

“I’ll take that. I’m driving.” He kept the cup, and the two of them traded seats.

Julian glanced over at her. She had 77 black roses in her arms, and she still outshone every one of them.

“I didn’t know which flowers you liked. I thought black roses would suit you.”

Black roses were rarer, harder to read, a little untouchable. That was her, exactly.

Nora smiled at him. “I like all of them. The ones you can make medicine out of even more.”

Julian let out a breath and handed her the cup. “Then next time I’ll bring you the medicinal kind.”

Nora took it, read the label, then looked back at that red, rigid face of his and had to bite down on a laugh. “Did you order this yourself?”

Julian nodded, then frowned. “You don’t like that flavor?”

“It’s not that.” She tapped the label, grinning at him. “What exactly did you order me?”

Julian was starting the car. He glanced at the cup, and the color that had begun to fade came roaring back.

He didn’t want to say it, but Nora was watching him, eyes bright, waiting.

Julian couldn’t stand to disappoint her, so he said it barely above a mumble. “Sugar-Sugar Berry-Berry Boom-Boom Shake.”

It came out so quietly that she almost missed it. “Sorry, what?”

“Sugar-Sugar Berry-Berry Boom-Boom Shake!”

Julian shouted it and hit the gas at the same time, trying to bury the words under the engine.

It didn’t work. Nora was already laughing, bright and helpless with it.

She was shaking so hard the cup nearly went over. “I couldn’t work out why your face was that red. I though you’d been in a fight, or robbed somebody for the flowers.

“Sugar-Sugar Berry-Berry Boom-Boom Shake.” Then she lost it all over again.

Nora was honestly delighted. She couldn’t picture it, a man six foot three with a face like a closed door, saying Sugar-Sugar Berry-Berry Boom-Boom in that flat, freezing voice of his.

It was so far from who he was that she couldn’t get over it.

Julian watched her come apart and went redder still. “Stop laughing. You’ll give yourself a cramp.”

Nora had tears in her eyes and an ache in her side by then. “Next time we’re ordering these together.”

She wanted to be standing right there when he said Sugar-Sugar Berry-Berry Boom-Boom to a cashier. The looks on people’s faces would be worth every second.

Julian glanced at her. “Fine.”

Nora took a sip and her whole face lit up. It was cold and thick, sweet in exactly the right way, and it beat every piece of candy she had ever had..

Sugar really could make a person happy.

Nora and Julian wandered the shops for a while, and he bought her a set of jewelry and a bag that was the only one of its kind in the world. Then, they drove to the Peregrine.

They were almost there when her phone lit up with a run of messages from Mandy in the family thread.

The first ones were photos, a bouquet of bright red roses, a black limited-edition bag that ran around $1,000,000, Adrian sitting across from her, and enough of the dining room in frame that anyone would recognize the Peregrine.

Mandy had written, “Mom, Dad, don’t wait on me for dinner. Ace is taking me out at the Peregrine.”

Victor came back with, “The Peregrine! I tried to book that place once for a deal with a big client and couldn’t get a table. Look at you, Mandy.”
