Chapter 184 An Empty Company
As for the staff, Mandy had paid whatever it took to take every one of them and left an empty building behind.
Nora laughed at it. “She isn’t completely stupid.”
A whole second life, and this was the best she had come up with.
Nora wrote back, “Thank you for taking all of them. Otherwise I’d have to watch every one of them for spies, I couldn’t trust any of them with real work, and I’d be paying their salaries the whole time. Firing them would have cost me double severance and landed me in a wrongful termination claim.”
She meant all of it. The plan for that meeting had been to clean house, and Mandy, with her half a brain had done the whole job for her.
The message stopped her cold, with the feeling that she had miscalculated somewhere.
Nora typed back, “No need to put on a brave face. Good people are hard to find. And I do feel for you, so before I left I lined up plenty of business to keep you going.”
Nora didn’t answer that one. She looked at the handful of people in the office.
“Introduce yourselves.”
One was a 49-year-old woman on the cleaning crew, another the guard from the lobby.
After them came the receptionist and Chloe, the intern who had been there a month.
Last was the accountant, three months pregnant.
That left Wolf Bait and Sabrina.
By the time all seven of them had finished, Nora was laughing out of sheer disbelief.
Mandy had left her a genuine mess. Cleaning, security, and the front desk took no particular skill,
Chloe was an intern with no experience at all.
The accountant could do the work, but she was pregnant, which meant appointments, time off, and then maternity leave. As Nora saw it, she would be paying for someone who wasn’t there.
And if Mandy had left the two moneymakers behind, they had to be walking disasters, or she would never have let them go.
Nora turned to the pair of them. “Why didn’t you go with her? Her company looks like the better bet.”
They answered honestly. “She didn’t want us. We can’t afford the exit penalties, and we’re booked solid with appearances and ads.”
Nora went through the bookings. Dozens of them, all small, all scattered.
Sabrina had a pile of bad streaming shows on her schedule, and the lead role she had signed for had been

turned down on her behalf.
rdy really did know how to build a mess.
Fit
Nora looked up at the two of them. “Work hard, keep your record clean, and trust me, and I’ll take both of you higher than you’ve ever been. Nobody gets buried here.”
Whatever Mandy threw at her, she would take it apart and send it back double.
Nora thought it over and sent one more message. “Thank you for the gift. One good turn deserves another and you’ll be getting something back from me.”
Mandy sneered. “All bluster. However good you are, you can’t beat somebody who already knows how it
ends.”
She had come back, and that gave her a head start on everything.
Nora sent everybody home and stayed in the office herself.
Every promising deal the company had signed before was gone, moved over to Mandy.
Wolf Bait had ads stacked on ads, products with no label, no license, and no factory behind them, terrible money, every one of them a landmine, and all of them carrying penalty clauses.
Sabrina had a survival show nobody watched and a string of small parts at insulting rates, including one at $1,000 an episode. All together it came to 100 commitments.
There was no getting through all of it in one night, so she took the contracts home with her. She still had to build a plan for the company.
Back at the Weston house, Constance met her at the door. “There you are. How was work? Are you tired?”
“It was fine,” Nora said.
Then, she saw Julian coming toward her and blinked. “You’re home?”
“Work’s over,” he said.
Constance laughed. “He never used to walk in before 11 or midnight. Two days married and he’s home the minute the day ends.”
It sounded a great deal like he had come home for her, and color came up in Nora’s face.
After dinner, she didn’t linger. She went up to the room and got back to work.
Julian watched her laugh at one page and frown at the next, and something turned over in his head.
Julian set a plate of fruit down in front of her. “Eat something.”
“Thanks.” Nora smiled at him, picked up a bright red strawberry, and put it in her mouth.
“Aren’t you going to sleep?” he asked.
