It took Nora a second, and then she started laughing. “Julian. You’ve been sitting there with your phone all night waiting for me to post, haven’t you?”
Julian said nothing and watched her.
“You could have just said so. When I came out of the shower you looked like you were closing a deal. It never crossed my mind that you were waiting on a post…”
“Nora.” It came out hard.
He’s actually annoyed.
“All right, all right. I’ll stop. I’m posting right now. Making it official with you.”
Still laughing, she raised her phone, took a picture of him, typed a caption, and put it up.
“Done. It’s live. Go look.”
Julian opened it. She had been laughing hard enough that her hand shook, and the picture had come out blurred.
The caption read, “My own husband. Sweeter than yours.”
At the Sinclair house, Mandy read the post and laughed out loud, delighted with it. “Idiot. She has no idea what’s coming, and she’s out there calling him sweeter. There’s plenty of misery ahead of her.”
Yvette put her own phone down. “Why are you watching her at all? Lock Adrian down first.”
All Mandy had to do was think about her last life, everything she swallowed, while Nora lived in luxury as the happiest woman alive, and it lit something in her that wouldn’t go out.
“I want her to eat every bit of what I ate.”
In her last life, she had married Julian in Nora’s place, and that was how she ended up widowed, thrown out of the Weston house, and selling herself to stay alive. All of it traced back to Nora.
Yvette looked at the swelling still sitting on her face. “I don’t know whether she suffers later. You’re suffering right now.
“It’s been a few days. How many times has she gotten you?” She studied the face across from her. “Doesn’t Nora seem like a different person to you?”
“Does she?” Mandy wasn’t impressed. “If anything, she’s gotten stupider.”
Yvette poked her cheek. “Don’t let knowing the future go to your head.
“Think about it. Did Nora ever hit anybody before? She swallowed everything for her grandmother’s sake.
“Now she hits you, she hits me, and she doesn’t give your father an inch.”

That stopped Mandy. She turned it over. “You’re right. She isn’t afraid of Dad cutting off her grandmother’s
ment anymore.”
Yvette kept working at it. “The way she is now, you couldn’t take anything off her, least of all a man who owes her his life.
“And yet she handed Adrian to you and helped you do it. Why?”
Mandy answered as if it were obvious. “Because I had her grandmother to hold over her.”
Yvette gave her a look. “The Nora we have now doesn’t get threatened into anything. What I see is a woman who can’t stand Adrian. Doesn’t that strike you as strange? If she hates him, why save his life?”
Mandy thought hard and couldn’t come up with a reason that held.
“That’s easy. She can’t see past the end of her nose. All she knows is that Julian ends up the richest man in the country. She doesn’t know what I know.
“So she’s afraid I’ll take him from her, and she puts on a show of hating Adrian.”
Yvette watched her file that away as settled and pushed harder. “You can see what’s coming. What if she can too?”
“That isn’t possible.” Mandy’s eyes went wide.
She wasn’t a psychic. She knew because she had died and come back.
But we died together. What if she came back with me?
Yvette’s voice dropped. “Nothing is impossible. You called the earthquake. You also called him ending up in an emergency room and a wedding with no groom, and neither one happened.”
Mandy’s certainty cracked.
She bit down on her lip. “Maybe Nora came back too.”
The thought frightened her enough to shake her head at it. “No. It isn’t possible. The universe picked me.
“Everything that’s different now comes from me saving Adrian and her marrying Julian. It’s the butterfly effect, that’s all.”
Yvette didn’t understand where the panic was coming from, and it worried her. “Mandy…”
Mandy grabbed her hand. “Mom, there’s no way she knows the future.
“If she did, why would she keep Wolf Bait and Sabrina and let me walk out with Colton Hale and Genevieve Ward?
“If she knew, she’d have fought me over those two with everything she had.”
Yvette frowned. “Aren’t they a pair of nobodies on three-year contracts? Your father was about to cut them
loose.”
