Reborn to Dodge the Bad Marriage novel Chapter 188

Chapter 188 Fifty Million

Constance turned to Julian. “You’re up late. No run this morning?”

“An octopus had hold of me,” he said. “I couldn’t get out.”

Who is he calling an octopus? Nora threw her hair tie at him.

Julian caught it, laughing, and held it back out to her. “Do you want me to put your hair up?”

“You know how?” she said.

“No.” He said it without a trace of embarrassment. “I can learn.”

Constance watched the whole exchange with a satisfied smile.

At breakfast, Constance noticed that Julian was eating crab cakes instead of living on liquids.

She watched him take a bite. “What does it taste like?”

“Bitter. Very bitter.”

Everything used to taste like nothing. Now, everything tasted bitter, plain water included.

The feeling of a knife going down his throat had eased off, though. These days it was closer to swallowing crushed glass.

Constance sighed and turned to her with hope all over her face. “How long does he take your medicine before his sense of taste comes back?”.

Nora paused, a crab cake halfway to the cocktail sauce. “That’s an appetite remedy, Grandma. It doesn’t bring taste back.

“His taste comes back when his body does.”

Constance leaned in. “Then can you treat him? Can you make him well?”

Julian didn’t want that weight put on her. “She isn’t a doctor, Grandma. Don’t put her on the spot.”

Nora thought about it and looked up at both of them. “There’s one person who could cure him.”

“Who?” Constance nearly came out of her chair.

Even Julian looked up.

Both of them staring at her was more pressure than she wanted. “The Snowbell Healer could treat him. Cure him, even.”

“The Snowbell Healer?” Constance grabbed at it. “That person is real? You’re certain they could treat him?”

Nora nodded without a flicker, for a healer she had largely made up herself. “That’s right. The Snowbell Healer.”

She didn’t actually know much. None of this had touched her last life. She had only heard the name once Rosalind started teaching her medicine.

of the books her grandmother gave her had the word Snowbell written inside the cover.

Nora had asked what it meant. The look that came over Rosalind’s face had gone soft and far away, and she said it was a person.

If I’m right, Grandma is the Snowbell Healer.

Constance took her hand. “Where is this healer? Take me there now. Whatever the price is, whatever they ask for, if it’s in my power they’ll have it.”

Later that day, not long after Nora finished a call, her phone buzzed with a text.

It was her bank, telling her money had landed in her account.

She counted the zeros after the five twice. “$50,000,000?”

Nora texted Julian. “You sent me $50,000,000?”

Julian wrote back, “That’s the daily limit.”

The implication was that without a limit, it would have been $100,000,000, or $200,000,000, or every cent

he had.

Nora typed, “Thank you for the education. The richest man in the country has a daily transfer limit of $50,000,000.”

Back in grade school she had tried to earn a little money for her grandmother through one of those online task scams and lost $3,000 to it.

The only reason it stopped there was the $3,000 daily limit on her card.

Julian wrote, “You’re welcome. My money is your money.”

Two minutes later another one came through. “I earn it so my wife can spend it.”

It made her laugh, and then she started picturing the face he made while he typed it.

Is he typing that with a straight face, like it’s official business? Or is he red all the way to his ears?

Nora had to know.

She typed, “They say a man is at his best when he’s working. Send me a picture of you right now.”

She waited, and nothing came back.

Something in her sank a little. “I pushed my luck.”

Why would he send me a picture?

Nora put the phone down and went to interview a manager for Sabrina herself.
