Chapter 189 A Signature She Won’t Give
Another message came in from Julian. “The photo is beautiful.”
Nora sent back a happy sticker.
Julian replied with the passive-aggressive little smiley.
Nora wrote, “?”
Julian wrote, “Something wrong?”
A man like him had no idea what that face meant to anybody else. He saw a smile, a polité one.
Nora typed, “Nothing. Just don’t send that one again. To me it reads as a fake smile.”
Julian wrote, “All right.”
Nora wrote, “Okay.”
Julian wrote, “Okay.”
Nora looked at the two of them saying absolutely nothing to each other, thought it over, and sent a cute sticker.
A cute sticker came straight back.
So that was the rule. Whatever she sent, he answered.
The conversation only ended when she ended it.
Proving it left her warm.
In her last life, Adrian ran it the other way around. Whenever he wrote, she answered on the spot, and he was the only one who decided when they were finished.
Three seconds without a reply and the phone rang, demanding to know where she was, what she was doing. and who she was with.
Middle of the night, sound asleep, it made no difference.
Nora never dared put the phone on silent, and she never slept deeply. It was suffocating.
Across town, Julian came out of a meeting.
He had the thread open too. There was nothing in it, dry as a bone, and reading it put him in a good mood
anyway.
Half an hour earlier, Miles had nearly dropped the phone when the boss asked him to take a picture.
Being told to make sure it looked good almost put him on the floor.
Julian was in an unusually agreeable mood today.

Miles decided the marriage could use a little help running smoothly.
“Is that photo from Mrs. Weston, sir?”
Julian’s mouth curved. “It is.”
Miles went on. “When a woman sends a man a picture of herself, there’s usually something behind it.”
“Such as?” Julian looked up at him. “You’d know?”
“Enough to speak on it. My first girlfriend left me because I never posted her anywhere. I’d say Mrs. Weston is hinting that you should post her, announce that she exists, and shut down any other woman with ideas.”
Julian thought about Nora’s personality and raised a brow. “You’re sure?”
“Women love it,” Miles said. “You can’t go wrong.”
It sounded reasonable enough, so he bent over his phone and posted for the second time in his life.
At the hospital, Olivia finished with a patient and checked her phone on her break.
There was Julian’s post, with Nora’s selfie attached to it.
His post read, “My wife is at her most beautiful when she’s working.”
The phone hit the floor hard. Olivia’s eyes filled and her jaw locked. “You took him from me, Nora. You
wait.”
Nora had just finished for the day when the hospital called.
“She’s in emergency surgery? You need a family member to sign? All right. Give me a minute. I’m on my way.”
At the hospital, Nora came through the doors at a run and stopped outside the surgical suite.
A nurse spotted her and pushed a stack of consent and liability forms at her. “You’re family to Wren Calloway? Ectopic pregnancy, heavy bleeding, and she came in too late. We have to take the uterus. Sign, quickly.”
Nora took the pen and the papers and didn’t sign. “I’m her cousin, so I can sign for her. How is she? Has her husband been notified?”
Wren was the cousin who had handed her a $200,000 check before the wedding.
She had married Damon Winter, of one of the Big Four families. The marriage was a bad one, and in Nora’s last life it ended with her taking her own life.
Nothing in that life had included an ectopic pregnancy or an emergency surgery like this one.
And why call me about a pregnancy and a hysterectomy instead of her husband?

Nora’s pen stopped above the line. “You’re taking the uterus? Is there some other condition?”
