Chapter 198 Brought In for Questioning

was nearly-shouting now. “I’m being framed! I would never do something like that!”

Nora had no interest in the defense. “Tell the police. They’ll investigate, and the result will say whether you were framed.”

The captain was standing there too. “Take them in. Separate rooms.”

Julian’s voice was cold. “He named Yvette Sinclair and Mandy Sinclair. Are they being brought in?”

The captain answered fast. “Both of them are under suspicion now, so yes, we’ll bring them in to assist.”

Then, he sent four or five officers out to the Sinclair house to collect them.

Nora and the others gave their statements, and the footage from outside the Starfall building came in.

It showed the three of them arriving separately through the afternoon. By seven, they were together, each one holding a cake and a bottle.

A little after eight, the moment Nora came out of the building, they opened the boxes, lit the candles, and threw everything at her.

An officer relayed their side of it. “They say she didn’t order the cake and they didn’t aim the bottles at you. They panicked and let go of them.”

Nora laughed at that. “Those decorations are sharp, and at that angle one of them could have gone into my eye. The candles were lit. My hair could have gone up.

“As for the bottles, accident or not, all three of them took money for this. Assault sticks either way. The rest is for the courts.”

None of them were minors either. They had turned 18 not long ago, left school early, and made a living online as keyboard warriors, picking fights and whipping up whatever outrage paid that week.

None of the three were decent people to begin with.

They could cry and beg all they wanted. It was going through the courts, and whatever charge stuck and however long they served, they had earned it.

Gus Merrick’s statement matched what he had said in the lobby. Yvette and Mandy had directed all of it.

Julian pushed the door open. “They’re here. Do you want to watch the interviews?”

Nora stood up. “Yes.” She wanted to hear what those two came up with.

She and Julian came out of the conference room and walked straight into Yvette and Mandy.

Mandy had both hands locked around Adrian’s arm, begging him with her whole face. “Ace, you have to believe me. Nora is my sister. How could I do something like that?

“And even if I wanted to, I wouldn’t be stupid enough to call him and wire him money where anybody could see it.”

Nora snorted. “Stupid and rotten, with nothing running upstairs. That’s exactly what you are.”

Mandy’s head snapped up. “You accuse me of everything and I let it go. I didn’t do this. I would never hurt you. Don’t stand there and run me down in front of Ace.”

Nora smirked. “Did you leave your brain at home? Forget what happened at the Wyndmere, when you tried something and I made a fool of you?”

That shut her up. She took hold of Adrian’s hand instead and poured it on. “Ace, believe me. This one was

me.”

Nora glanced at his hand. “Stop shaking his arm. That hand is cut. It was bandaged an hour ago.”

Mandy looked down and found the gauze. She didn’t let go, only held his hand more carefully. “Ace, what happened? When? Why didn’t you tell me?

“It must hurt. Let me kiss it better.”

Adrian drew the hand back anyway, gentle about it. “It’s nothing. A small cut.”

Whatever she felt for him, it hadn’t been enough to notice the bandage until somebody pointed at it.

Nora turned back to her. “Stop cozying up to Adrian and start thinking about your answers. Otherwise they’ll hold you for 24 hours at minimum.”

Panic took her. “Ace, help me. I don’t want to be held here. This has nothing to do with me. I didn’t pay anybody to hurt her.

“Believe me. Please.”

Yvette thought Mandy was coming apart far too easily. She addressed the officers without a ripple. “Ask us anything. We’ll cooperate completely. We haven’t done anything wrong, so questions don’t frighten us, and I trust the police won’t hold anyone without cause.”

There wasn’t a flicker of guilt anywhere in it.

Anybody who didn’t know what she was would have believed her.

Yvette turned to settle Mandy down. “Don’t be frightened. A police station is the fairest place there is. Nobody here plays favorites. If we didn’t do it, there’s nothing to fear.

“And don’t put Mr. Pierce in a difficult position over it.”

She pinched Mandy’s palm while she said it, a reminder to pay some attention to his injured hand instead of only to herself.

That settled her considerably. She stopped begging and started fussing over him instead.

The officers didn’t give her the chance. They took her back for questioning.

The interview started, and it didn’t take long to reach what Gus Merrick had said.
