Chapter 197 At the Station

story had turned and the traffic was enormous, and reading those headlines and all that fan activity still put a line between Nora’s brows.
So that’s what a star at the top can do.
It had started as her problem with Gus Merrick and turned into a nationwide appreciation post for Preston Voss, with her own story pushed off to the side.
“Nora. We’re here.”
Nora had been buried in the phone. When she looked up, Julian already had her door open.
She got out and looked up at the building. “The station.”
“Mm,” he said. “What had you so absorbed?”
“Watching my story flip,” she said. “They’re tearing Gus Merrick apart out there.”
Nora looked over at him. “Those media companies. Was that you?”
Preston speaking up had genuinely surprised her.
The outlets were another matter. The statements and the apologies were too uniform and came too fast.
An hour earlier not one of them would give her the time of day. A one-eighty that fast pointed at exactly
one person.
Julian didn’t deny it. “Not much. I had Miles make a few calls. And I wasn’t the only one working on it. From what he tells me, several people were.”
That surprised her. “Ryder, probably, and my grandmother. He and I are partners right now, so anything that sticks to me sticks to him.”
Rosalind would rather refuse her in public than risk exposing who she was, and behind the scenes she never stopped helping.
As for Ryder, he had appointed himself her second, and he would have thrown himself at this the moment he heard.
Julian was curious. “Your grandmother has that kind of reach?”
Nora smiled. “Either way, thank you.”
Julian frowned. The smile she gave him was polite and nowhere near warm. “We’re married. You don’t have to be polite with me. When something happens and you need help, I want to be the first person you think
“Instead of keeping score like you’re afraid of owing me anything, holding me off like a stranger.”
Nora smiled at him. “You’re reading too much into it. I solve things my own way. Nobody brings a sledgehammer to hang a picture.”

Nora had turned it into a joke and handed it back to him, and there was nothing he could do with that.
Inside the station she spotted Gus Merrick in the lobby with handcuff’s on. “They picked you up that fast?”
Gus looked at her the way a drowning man looks at a rope. “Ms. Sinclair, I know I was wrong. Please let this
“I was never going after you. I was going after Sabrina Cole.. Putting it online was desperation, and Yvette and Mandy walked me through how to do it.
“I never meant to hurt you. I had nothing left. There wasn’t a job for me anywhere in this city.”
If the officers hadn’t had hold of him, he would have gone down on his knees.
Gus had never guessed that Adrian Pierce wasn’t the one standing behind her. Julian Weston was.
Gus couldn’t make himself look up. Julian’s presence alone scared him down to his bones.
None of it surprised Nora. “Yvette and Mandy told you to do it?”
Adrian frowned at him. “That can’t be right. Mandy is a kind person. You’ve misunderstood something.”
Nora laughed out loud at that.
Adrian frightened him. Julian frightened him more. “It started with Mandy. She came to me as Mr. Pierce’s girlfriend and told me to go after Sabrina Cole. That’s the only reason the ad department dared treat her that way.
“None of us expected Ms. Sinclair to step in for her, and then everything else happened.”
Gus went for his pocket. “Look at my phone. Every call between me and Mandy is on it.”
There was no phone there. “They already took it. They’ll find it. Every word of this is true, and the money for the paid posters came from Yvette.”
Nora pointed at the three girls. “Do you know them?”
Gus looked them over carefully and shook his head. “No.”
Nora kept going. “They waited outside my building with a blade set into a cake and wine bottles in their hands, planning to kill me. And they say they did it for you.”
The three of them had been listening to every word, and shock turned into fury.
“You lied to us! You went after Sabrina Cole first, and you were paid to do it?
“No wonder you sent us money and her office address and told us what to do and to say we were minors. You used us!”
