Chapter 207 A Slap in the Dark

“I’d known, I never would’ve saved him,” Mandy murmured. “Now I’ve got a scar, and I fell for him, and all he does is hurt me. But…”
She held the last butterscotch candy in her hand and went on quietly. “Even if I got a do-over, I’d still save Ace. I don’t need anything back. I just want him to be okay for the rest of his life.”
Adrian stood behind her and heard every word. He looked down at all the wrappers on the ground, then ap the one candy left in her hand. “Why’d you stop?”
Mandy didn’t even look up. She answered like she was talking to a stranger. “I’m saving one for Ace. So he has a little something sweet in his life.”
Adrian sighed and sat down beside her. “Come on. Don’t be mad.”
Mandy whipped around as if she’d only just realized he’d followed her. “Ace?”
“Yeah, it’s me. Let me take you home.”
Mandy turned away. “I don’t want you to. You’ll just make me apologize to Nora again, even though she’s the one bullying me!”
Adrian had been softening, ready to coax her out of her mood, but that made him angry all over again.
“What do you mean Nora’s bullying you?” he demanded. “You two twisted the truth and got people to attack her online first. Isn’t that what happened?”
Mandy stared at him. Once again, he was taking Nora’s side and blaming her instead.
She shot back angrily, “I wasn’t even there! How was I supposed to know what really happened? Gus called me and sent me the video, so I figured I’d expose her and pay her back for what she did to me. Is that so wrong?”
Adrian frowned. “You’re the one who told Gus to leak it. It wasn’t just you watching some video! And besides
Mandy jumped to her feet and cut him off. “What’s wrong with what I did? Last time, Nora almost got me raped! I can’t even get back at her for that? Why should I play the saint, forgive her, and be nice to her?
“I hate her! I hate her for what she did to me! I hate her for making you think I’m dirty! And now she’s got my parents fighting, and my dad thinks I’m a bastard! She’s the evil one!”
Adrian shook his head. “I don’t think you’re dirty. And Nora has nothing to do with it.”
It was just that whenever he pictured Trevor pinning Mandy down, it brought back something from his own childhood, and he couldn’t help recoiling, sick to his stomach.
That only made Mandy angrier. She screamed at him, “You always take Nora’s side! Do you like her now? Adrian, I’m the one who saved you! Nora’s nothing but a—”
She broke off with a shriek. Out of nowhere, a spray of cold water had hit her right in the face, and it didn’t stop there. Her clothes were getting soaked too.

Mandy spun around, furious. Two or three kids stood there with water guns aimed right at her, squirting
way and yelling, “Get the bad lady! Get the bad lady!”
“Ugh! You little brats!” Mandy screamed, and the second she opened her mouth, one of them aimed right at it. Water shot straight down her throat.
It reeked like a drainage ditch. It was like swallowing a mouthful of swamp bugs.
Mandy gagged, then took off after the kids, still retching. “I’ll kill you!”
The kids bolted. One of them was lugging a little bucket, and when she nearly caught him, he shrieked and hurled it at her.
Cold water hit Mandy all over. She looked down. Her clothes were soaked through, and she was covered in black muck and tiny water bugs. That bucket had been filled from a drainage ditch!
She screamed with rage, grabbed a stick off the ground, and went after the kids, who were already scattering in every direction.
But she was in heels, it was dark, and she was blind with fury. She twisted her ankle and slammed face-first into the ground. Suddenly, her mouth was full of blood, and she burst into howling sobs.
Adrian rushed over to help her up. “Are you okay?”
Everything that had hit her that night had piled up until Mandy completely lost it. And when she looked up, the kids who’d run off were making faces at her.
That pushed her over the edge. She yanked off a shoe and threw it at them, but she missed.
Mandy turned on Adrian, frantic with rage. “Ace, go kill those brats!”
Adrian looked over at the kids. They couldn’t have been more than five or six. He frowned at Mandy. “Let it go. They’re just kids.”
Mandy shrieked, “They did it on purpose! Nora put them up to it!” She’d scraped herself up in the fall, and her mouth was still full of blood. When she screamed like that, spit and blood sprayed everywhere.
She looked like a raving lunatic. Adrian frowned and let go of her. “Nora’s already gone. She had no idea you’d be here. There’s no way she set up a bunch of kids to-”
Mandy cut him off, furious and hurt. “There you go again, defending Nora! You like her, don’t you? Fine! If you like her, we’re done! Go be her boy toy on the side! You two can have a bastard together, and then one bastard can pop out another—”
Before she could finish, Adrian slapped her hard across the face.
