Chapter 222 The Seat of Honor

“an’t say whether she’s really a healer,” one of the older doctors murmured, “but with a presence like that, she must be somebody. At least as important as Dr. Blithe.”.
“In a hospital, who cares who you are? Status doesn’t mean a thing. Even a president on the operating table is just another patient under the knife.”
“Let’s wait and see. No need to take sides yet. If she grew up in a family of doctors and started learning as a kid, it’s not impossible. Look at Olivia Blithe. She’s already pretty famous as a young prodigy.”
“Olivia’s different. She’s Dr. Blithe’s granddaughter. But this Nora Sinclair? I’ve never heard of her. I’ve never heard of a family of doctors named Sinclair, either.”
The Blithes were the most prestigious medical family there was, and no one had ever heard of a Sinclair among the well-known doctors, not even in the generation before.
“Plenty of brilliant doctors out there keep a low profile. They don’t care about fame, or they only take on students they really click with. You can’t judge someone by how she looks. Let’s keep it down.”
Mandy watched everyone’s mixed reactions to Nora. Not one of them had the guts to call her out and expose her as a fake, and Mandy gritted her teeth in frustration.
Paige, one of the socialites, whispered to her, “Is your sister really a healer? You didn’t know?”
Mandy looked sick. “She didn’t grow up with us. How would I know if she’s a healer? If I’d known, do you think I would’ve embarrassed myself like that?”
It was bad enough that she’d dropped to her knees in front of everyone and bowed to Nora, begging her to treat Evelyn. She’d even begged her to save Nora’s own husband.
She couldn’t imagine what all these people thought of her now. She wanted to die of embarrassment!
Paige looked at Nora’s back. “She really doesn’t look like a healer, If I’d known it was her, I wouldn’t have bothered being a greeter. I’ve been wearing myself out for days.”
Then, she asked curiously, “Oh, right, Mandy. Your sister’s married? Who’d she marry? I never heard about it.”
Who do you think? Julian Weston! But Mandy didn’t want to answer that.
Just then, the lobby manager hurried over. “Ms. Sinclair, Paige, go stand up front.”
He told Paige specifically, “Make sure you take good care of her. Dr. Blithe said the young healer gets anything she wants, no questions asked.”
Paige pouted. “Why are you only telling me?”
The lobby manager smiled at Mandy, then said to Paige, “Ms. Sinclair is Mr. Pierce’s girlfriend. If you weren’t her friend, you wouldn’t even get to work up front.”
Mandy couldn’t help lifting her chin proudly. That was the perk of being Adrian’s girlfriend. That was her status!

Paige felt envious, then jealous, then contemptuous. Adrian’s girlfriend or not, Mandy was still stuck
orking as a server, same as Paige.

The general manager respectfully escorted Nora and the others into the conference hall.
Nora spotted her name card right away. It was placed dead center.
The manager smiled and gestured. “Right this way, please.”
Nora raised an eyebrow. “Are you sure that’s my seat?”
Seating had always mattered. The center seat was the place of honor, reserved for the most powerful and respected person in the room. There were five seats at the head table, and the one right in the middle was hers.
The name cards to her left read Cordelia Blithe and Gideon Vance. The one on the far right read Zane Whitlock.
Nora frowned at the name. Zane Whitlock? The fourth son of the Whitlock family?
Zane outranked Cordelia by a mile, and yet he’d been seated off to the side next to Nora.
Nora turned to Cordelia. “Dr. Blithe, you do know who Zane Whitlock is, right?”
It was obvious what was going on. Cordelia was deliberately putting Nora on a pedestal so she’d offend Zane, and the whole Whitlock family with him.
Cordelia smiled. “In here, status doesn’t matter. Medical knowledge is all that counts.
“Today, you’re our guest of honor, and it took a lot of effort to get you here. Please, take the seat.”
Nora scoffed. “You really are a sly old fox, Dr. Blithe. Every word’s a trap. If I don’t dare take the seat of honor now, that proves I’ve got no real skill. I’m not a healer. I’m just a fraud.”
She clicked her tongue and shook her head. “Dr. Blithe, at your age, you really shouldn’t act like some catty little brat with all that passive-aggressive talk. It’s better to just say what you
you mean.”
That was basically calling Cordelia a brat to her face.
Cordelia’s smile went stiff.
For decades, people had looked up to her and treated her with respect. Because of her medical skill, even the most powerful people deferred to her.
But Nora had never shown her an ounce of respect. She put Cordelia down every chance she got.
Zane walked in just in time to hear that, and he turned on Nora, furious. “You have no class at all. Dr. Blithe gives you the best seat in the house, and you insult her?”
“A brat?” Zane snorted. “Just wait. If your skills don’t hold up, don’t blame me when I have you thrown out like the brat you are!”

Nora looked up at him. He was tall and long-legged, with a seriously handsome face. She was surprised. “It’s
Qu?”
She recognized him. He’d had an asthma attack in the hotel’s underground parking garage that day.
Zane frowned at how familiar she sounded and tried to remember whether they’d met.
Cordelia asked him, “Zane, do you two know each other?”
If they did, she’d have to rethink how she handled Nora and seriously consider patching things up.
Zane looked Nora up and down and searched his memory again. He was sure he’d never met her or even seen her before.
