Reborn to Dodge the Bad Marriage novel Chapter 221

Chapter 221 Built Up to Fall

B Nora was so young and so beautiful. She had an elegant, regal air about her, but she didn’t look anything like a legendary healer. Mandy was just a greeter, but what she’d shouted stuck, and people started having serious doubts about Nora.

They all turned to Cordelia. “Dr. Blithe, is she the young healer you were talking about?”

“She can’t be. She doesn’t look like one. She must be the healer’s assistant.”

“Excuse me. Could you step aside and let your boss out of the car? We’ve all been waiting to meet the healer.”

Cordelia hurried forward with a smile. “There’s no mistake. Nora is the young healer I invited.”

She stood beside Nora and addressed the crowd. “You all know that for years, I’ve been researching one particular illness and treating one particular patient.

“That patient wasn’t expected to live another month. But thanks to Nora, he’s still alive, and that’s bought me more time to develop a treatment.

“So she more than deserves to be called a healer. Maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but I think very highly of her.

“And if Nora’s willing, I’d like to take her on as my protégé. I’ll teach her everything I’ve learned in my lifetime, and she’ll get more from me than my own granddaughter ever has.”

Nora looked at Cordelia, who was heaping all this praise on her, and laughed softly. “So that’s why you went to so much trouble with my invitation. You’re building me up just so you can knock me down.”

She didn’t have a medical license, and she had no name in the medical world. And yet Cordelia had led famous doctors from every field out into the blazing sun to welcome her.

On top of that, Cordelia had announced she wanted Nora as her protégé, a bond even closer than teacher and student. If Nora refused, she’d look stuck-up.

Cordelia was putting her on a pedestal to force her into becoming her student. All these people who’d come eager to meet a young healer would go from excited to suspicious to angry.

By then, her reputation among doctors would be ruined. Everyone would see her as a little fraud.

Leave it to Cordelia to stir up this kind of trouble.

Cordelia put on a look of sincere apology. “You’re overthinking it, my young healer. I truly mean to treat you as my guest of honor and make up for that invitation mess last time.”

She bowed slightly and gestured Nora toward the doors. “After you, please.”

Nora looked down at her without a word.

Cordelia stayed bent over, but the way Nora was looking down at her made her skin crawl. With her head lowered, she scowled harder and harder.

She hadn’t expected Nora to have this kind of presence. Here was someone of Cordelia’s standing, bowing and inviting her in, and Nora stayed perfectly calm. She didn’t look the least bit flustered. She was even Tocking down on Cordelia.

It was like Cordelia really was some old servant, and bowing to Nora was simply her job.

Nora kept watching her. She caught a glimpse of the scowl on Cordelia’s face and gave a soft laugh. “All right.”

If Cordelia wanted to put her on a pedestal, fine. Nora would climb right up, and she’d step all over Corde to get there.

For someone without real skill, being built up like this was a trap. For someone with real skill, it was an opportunity.

With Cordelia bowing like an old servant and a crowd of famous doctors there to greet her, Nora walked into the Wyndmere as naturally and elegantly as a queen.

Cordelia’s expression turned downright ugly. She’d only bowed like that to put Nora on the spot and leave her no way out. She’d never meant for Nora to just stroll right in..

Gideon watched Nora walk in, then quietly said to Cordelia, who was still bowing, “Dr. Blithe, Nora’s gone inside.”

If Cordelia didn’t straighten up and follow soon, she’d be left behind, and then everyone would see her gracious gesture for the act it was.

Nora stopped at the door, turned around, and gave Cordelia a respectful smile. “Aren’t you coming, Dr. Blithe? Would you like me to come back and help you along?”

On its own, that would have sounded perfectly respectful. But with Cordelia bent over like an old servant, it came off as pure mockery.

Everyone turned to look at Cordelia, and the looks she got were mixed. It seemed like she wanted to play the humble servant and still act superior at the same time.

Cordelia winced, then straightened up and told everyone, “Let’s go in. Let’s follow our young healer inside.”

She followed Nora, and everyone else followed her. Plenty of them weren’t happy about it.

The crowd wasn’t just made up of renowned older doctors. There were also top young talents from medical schools, at the age when people cared most about their pride and had the hardest time keeping their tempers.

“Who is she, anyway? Is she really some kind of healer? She looks younger than us. She’s not a fraud, is she?”

“I spent two whole years preparing for Dr. Blithe’s conference. She’s been my idol since I was a kid. If this little fraud cons her, I swear I’ll lose it!”

“I thought this was going to be a serious academic conference where we could learn from Dr. Blithe and the other senior doctors. With everyone fawning over her like this, how are we supposed to learn anything?”

“Women are all the same. She’s turning a medical conference into a fan club. It’s never been like this before. I can’t stand her. I’m going to expose her later!”
