Chapter 224 Like Her Own Grandson
“Since you insist on putting me up there, keep me up there the whole way,” Nora went on. “Don’t you dare change your tune halfway through, or you’ll throw away the good name you spent a lifetime building. I’m not going to just sit back and take it.”
With that, she sat right down in the seat of honor without a hint of hesitation.
If Cordelia had simply invited her to the conference, Nora would’ve shown her some respect for now and kept things civil on the surface.
But clearly, Cordelia was using the conference to trip her up and drag her name through the mud in the medical world. So Cordelia couldn’t blame her for not even pretending to be friendly.
Cordelia forced a stiff smile. “Your work has been excellent so far, and I have faith in your skills. I’m sure you’ll share something valuable with everyone today. You’ll even get to examine Mrs. Whitlock.
“With talent like yours, you’ve earned the right to talk to anyone however you want.”
Nora frowned. “Examine Mrs. Whitlock?”
She turned to Zane. “Your grandma?”
“Yeah,” Zane said with a firm nod. “And I don’t trust your skills. I’m not letting you anywhere near her!”
Nora gave a cold laugh. “Thanks. Even if you begged me to treat her, I wouldn’t want to.”
“I’d never beg you!” Zane shot back. “If you don’t-”
Nora cut him off again. “Do your pretty face a favor and stop talking.”
Zane huffed and turned his head away.
Nora couldn’t explain it, but something about Zane felt familiar, almost like family. He talked without thinking, and he couldn’t see what was right in front of him, but she didn’t actually dislike him. It was a strange feeling.
Cordelia stared at Zane in disbelief. Nora had insulted him again and again, and he wasn’t even angry. He was acting strange.
Is this really Zane Whitlock? Cordelia could hardly believe it.
Everyone knew Zane was a spoiled hothead with a nasty temper. Anyone who insulted him even once got their teeth knocked in.
But now, forget beating Nora up. He hadn’t even raised his voice at her. It was bizarre!
Cordelia glanced at Nora. There was something about her eyes that reminded Cordelia of her younger cousin, and she really was a knockout.
No wonder Zane hadn’t gotten that angry when she insulted him. That was the power of a pretty face.
Cordelia pushed the thought aside and smiled at everyone. “Please, have a seat and get ready. We’ll start in

en, she leaned across Nora to ask Zane, “Zane, where’s your grandmother?”

“She came with me,” Zane said, “but she got tired. She’s resting for a bit. She’ll come in toward the end.”
Nora glanced at the seat next to Zane. There was a name card there, but it was blank. It had to be reserved for Augusta Whitlock, Zane’s grandmother and the matriarch of the Whitlock family.
She looked at Zane again, then searched his name on her phone. Nothing came up.
But it didn’t take her long to put it together. He had to be the fourth son of the powerful Whitlock family, the one behind the auction last time.
So after she’d used her needles on Zane and left, Olivia had swooped in, taken him to the hospital, and become his hero. And that was how the Whitlocks and the Blithes had gotten close.
The thought made Nora scoff.
Zane heard her and shot her an annoyed glare. “What are you laughing at now?”
Nora remembered that Zane was apparently a masochist. The more she insulted him, the more he liked it, and she wasn’t about to give him that satisfaction.
So she gave him her friendliest, brightest smile. “I’m laughing because you’re so handsome. Is that a problem?”
She said it so earnestly, and her smile was so bright, that Zane suddenly felt awkward. Maybe he’d been too harsh with her just now.
But she’d treated Cordelia so badly, and she was passing herself off as some young healer. He couldn’t let
that slide!
Zane was torn. He couldn’t bring himself to get mad at her, and he refused to let her compliment make him smile. So he just went red in the face and looked away again.
Nora was speechless.
Cordelia frowned. She was starting to feel like inviting Nora today had been another miscalculation.
She turned to Gideon and lowered her voice. “How’s the presentation coming along?”
Gideon looked at Cordelia, so warm and kindly on the surface. He’d seen everything she’d done today, and suddenly, she felt like a stranger to him.
Is she really trying to make things right with Nora, or is she setting her up to fall? Is she even the mentor I used to trust? Gideon couldn’t shake the questions.
When he didn’t answer, Cordelia’s tone sharpened. “Gideon?”
Gideon snapped out of it and slid the materials over to her. “It’s all ready for you.”
Cordelia could see that his mind was somewhere else, so she leaned in and spoke quietly. “Gideon, however I treat Nora, I’ll always be good to you. I raised you myself. You’re not my grandson by blood, but you mean
