When did I chew you out?” Constance demanded. “If it weren’t for your treatment, would we have to go through all this?
“Keeping you alive is what matters must. Don’t you know me better than that?”
Julian kept his eyes on the road. “That’s exactly it. I know you put me first. That’s how I know Nora doesn’t matter as much to you.”
Constance didn’t want to keep arguing about it. “Enough. That’s not the main reason I called.
“You walked out of your meeting to go to the police station. Where are you now?”
Julian glanced at the GPS. He was still 20 minutes away. “I’m almost there. You don’t need to worry about it, Grandma,” he said, a little colder.
Constance raised her voice sharply. “What do you mean I don’t need to worry? Nora may be your wife, but she’s my granddaughter-in-law too!
“And you may be the CEO, but does that make the company yours alone? Do you have any idea how much damage you’ve done by walking out like that?”
“If that’s all, Grandma, I’m going to hang up. I’m busy.” Then, he added, “I’ll make back whatever the company loses. But if anything happens to Nora, I’ll regret it for the rest of my life.
“Grandma, no matter what you say, this time, Nora comes first.”
If this had been routine questioning, he wouldn’t have been so worried. A lawyer would have been enough. But something was clearly off this time.
He’d been right next door, but the doors were shut and the rooms were soundproof, so he hadn’t heard a thing.
The staff had kept their mouths shut too. When he’d asked about Nora’s conference, they’d only told him it was over. Nobody mentioned that something had happened and the whole thing had ended in a hurry.
A police station was supposed to be the fairest place there was. But with the right connections and a sharp lawyer, it was also the easiest place to arrange an accident.
Julian didn’t usually worry about Nora. She was smart and capable, and she always found her way out of trouble. But this time, his gut told him she was in danger.
Constance spoke in a low voice. “I only called to ask whether you’d gone public about Nora, and whether you were on your way to find her.
“Miles already called and told me what’s going on at the company. I’m on my way to handle the international meeting myself. I’ll get that contract signed so the board can’t give you or Nora any trouble later.”
Julian was stunned for a moment. “Grandma…”
Constance cut him off. “Just go. Don’t worry about it.”

“Thank you, Grandma.” Julian hung up, focused on the road, and stepped on the gas.

At arst, Wren’s heart had been in her throat. She’d been afraid Constance would pressure Julian into going back to his meeting and forgetting about Nora. But when she heard how the call ended, she breathed a sigh of relief.
“Mr. Weston, if your grandmother’s going to the meeting, the deal should be okay, right?” Wren asked.
Julian nodded. “With someone of her standing showing up in person, it’s as good as done.”
The international deal was mostly hammered out already. This meeting was about the details, and the signing would happen the day after tomorrow.
Wren relaxed. “Good. If the deal fell through, Nora would blame herself.”

It should have been a 20-minute drive. Julian made it to the Fairmont precinct in 13 minutes and 17 seconds.
The Wyndmere was in the Fairmont district, so that was the precinct that had taken Nora in.
“I’m Julian Weston, Nora Sinclair’s husband. Can I see her now?” Julian asked the officer at the front desk.
The officer shook his head. “Not while she’s giving her statement.”
Julian had known that already. He’d only asked to make sure Nora was actually there.
He checked his watch and frowned as he called his lawyer. “You’re not here yet?”
“I’m stuck in traffic,” came the reply. “Just a little longer.”
Julian waited, and that “little longer” dragged on for almost half an hour.
Finally, Neil Shaw, the star attorney Julian kept on retainer, came rushing in. He was dripping with sweat and so out of breath that he could barely get the words out, but the moment he saw Julian, he started apologizing. “Mr. Weston, I’m so sorry. The traffic was a nightmare.”
Julian looked him over. Neil’s shirt was soaked through with sweat, and he was carrying his dress shoes in one hand. His white socks had turned a grimy gray.
Neil wiped his forehead, embarrassed, then hurried to drop the shoes on the floor and step into them. “It was completely gridlocked, so I ran the rest of the way.”
He hadn’t had much choice. Sitting in that traffic would’ve taken forever, and any other route meant a detour of almost an hour. So he’d gotten out and run, and when his dress shoes started killing his feet, he’d pulled them off and kept going in his socks. It wasn’t exactly a good look in front of a client like Julian.
Julian looked a little less grim. “Go see my wife first. When you do, tell her I’m right outside waiting for her.”
Wren handed Neil a glass of water. He drained it in one gulp, then went in to meet with Nora as her
attorney.
