Fist, the overseas partners had threatened to pull out of the deal unless Julian went back to the meeting. Then, Neil had gotten stuck in traffic and shown up more than half an hour late.

Now, the police were saying Nora wasn’t even at this precinct, but at another one almost an hour away. Each thing made sense on its own, but put together, it was unc coincidence too many.

By now, Wren was terrified that something would happen to Nora.

“I won’t let anything happen to her.” Julian opened the car door, then added, “And you can just call me Julian. We’re family.”

“Oh, okay,” Wren murmured.

Julian slid behind the wheel and turned to Neil in the passenger seat. “Are you sure Nora’s at the Longbrook precinct?” He had to be certain this time. They couldn’t afford another wild-goose chase.

“I’m sure,” Neil said.

Julian looked grim as he made a call. “Spencer, my wife’s being held at the Longbrook precinct. Meet me

there.”

Wren had a bad feeling about all of this. She took out her phone and dialed a number she still knew by heart, and the call connected almost right away.

Damon sounded tense, almost eager, but he went out of his way to sound mocking. “Well, well, Ms. Calloway. Can’t make it out there on your own, so you’re calling to beg me for help?”

Wren frowned. “No, I…” She looked down. “Something’s happened. Could you do me a favor?”

Julian had just hung up, and he caught Wren’s eye in the rearview mirror.

On the other end of the line, Damon was thinking about the day they’d divorced. She’d signed the papers without a moment’s hesitation, then turned and walked out without looking back once.

Now, hearing her ask him for help in that small, quiet voice, he couldn’t deny the thrill of it. It was the thrill of knowing she couldn’t make it without him, that in the end, she still needed him.

“You want my help?” Damon smirked. “And how exactly are you planning to repay me, Ms. Calloway? With a pile of cash, or with your body?”

Neil twisted around in his seat and stared at Wren, wide-eyed. “Wait, you think the man driving this car can’t handle this, but Damon Winter can? You’re actually asking him for help?

“You’d better hang up. If you go begging Damon now, you’re basically slapping Mr. Weston in the face.”

Julian was Nora’s husband, for crying out loud. In money and status, he could more than hold his own against Damon, and yet she’d gone and called Damon instead.

Wren froze and looked up at Julian, her face turning red with embarrassment.

For once, she stood her ground with Damon. “Never mind,” she said. “I don’t need you now.” She’d been so

worried about Nora that she’d completely forgotten who Julian was and called Damon out of sheer habit.

Damon had heard a man’s voice in the background, then Wren brushing him off, and then the line went dead. He was instantly livid.

“You don’t want my help?” he snapped at the silent phone. “Well, too bad, because I’m helping anyway!

“You’re going to owe me, Wren, whether you like it or not!”

If she thought the divorce meant she was done with him for good, she had another thing coming.

Back in the car, Julian met Wren’s eyes in the mirror again. “I’ve already called Spencer. Nora’s going to be

fine.

“You’re Nora’s cousin, so act like it. Hold your head up, and don’t go groveling to anyone. It makes her look bad.” What he really meant was that she shouldn’t humble herself like that in front of Damon.

Wren gave Julian an awkward smile. “I know. I just wanted to help.”

Julian only hummed in reply, and nobody said another word for the rest of the drive.

Inside the interrogation room, a bank of heat lamps blazed right above Nora’s head, every one of them switched on, and they had her sweating all over.

Sweat beaded on her forehead and soaked into her hair. Drop after drop rolled down her face, and her clothes were damp with it.

On the table in front of Nora sat a plate of greasy fried chicken and a buttery lobster tail, along with a glass of water that looked incredibly refreshing. Her lips were so dry that they’d cracked and started to peel, but she still hadn’t touched the water.

Brent Hammond, the attorney sitting across the table, folded his hands, “Ms. Sinclair, I’m your lawyer, and I handle this kind of thing all the time. Trust me, your situation isn’t that serious.

“Mr. Weston sent me to talk to you, and we’ve already discussed it. All you have to do is admit you paid off that nurse to make Tanya lose the baby, apologize to her, and pay her $50,000,000.

“Then this all goes away. Tanya drops the case and signs a statement saying she won’t press charges.”

It had been like this the whole time. For an hour, the hot lights would blaze down on Nora. Then, they’d switch off, and the AC would blast the room as cold as it could go for another hour. After that, it was back to the lights, and back to the cold.

After almost four hours of swinging between hot and cold, she’d gone pale, and she was starting to run a fever.

Nora looked up at Brent, who’d been coming in every half hour to push her to confess and apologize. She gave him a mocking smile, her lips dry and cracked. “Julian sent you?” It was the first thing she’d said in four hours.

Now that she was finally talking, Brent thought he might be getting somewhere. “That’s right,” he said quickly. “Mr. Weston was very worried when he heard you’d been taken in, but he’s in the middle of a very
