Reborn to Dodge the Bad Marriage novel Chapter 262

Chapter 262 Nora Doesn’t Beg

Finished

Once, sweet words like that would have convinced Constance that Olivia was gentle and good-natured, a selfless girl with a noble heart. But after everything that had happened lately, she’d come to see it was all for show. It was nothing but pretty talk.

Constance had a real problem with the Blithes now, but she wasn’t about to fall out with them in the open.

She kept her voice even. “Oh, don’t worry. I won’t make Nora beg you. She’s Julian’s wife and my granddaughter-in-law. She doesn’t beg anybody.”

Olivia was caught off guard by how fiercely Constance was sticking up for Nora. She looked up at Cordelia, whose face had soured too.

Only Sienna was still fired up. “Grandma, have you lost your mind? Olivia’s the one who deserves to be Julian’s wife. Now Nora…”

Constance cut her off sharply. “Sienna Weston, don’t forget your place. You’re not my granddaughter by blood, and you and Julian are only cousins. What happens in my branch of this family is none of your business. You’re the granddaughter of my husband’s mistress. You don’t get a say!

“Say one more stupid thing, and I’ll have you thrown off the Weston estate!”

Sienna went white. The word “mistress” stung, and her eyes filled with tears. They spilled down her cheeks, but she didn’t dare say another word.

Sienna’s real grandmother had been one of the mistresses Julian’s late grandfather had taken in back when he kept more than one woman. By the old rules, that made her father an illegitimate son and her an illegitimate granddaughter, with no right to speak up.

But it still hurt. Growing up, she’d always thought of Constance as just her grandma, not as the wife who outranked her real grandmother.

Olivia jumped in quickly. “Grandma Weston, Sienna’s just worried sick about Julian. She’s upset that Nora would, at a time like this…”

Constance cut her off coolly. “Julian’s out of the ER. I’m going to go see him. Don’t let me keep you.” She hung up before Olivia could say another word.

Olivia listened to the dead line for a moment, then looked up at Cordelia sheepishly. “Grandma, Julian’s out of the ER.”

Now Nora would never come begging. They wouldn’t even get the chance to name their price for saving Julian, which was Nora and Julian’s divorce.

Cordelia was stunned too. She knew Constance well. To save Julian, Constance would do anything. She’d give away the family fortune or throw away her pride, and she’d even kill without a second thought, as long as it kept Julian alive.

But now, Constance was standing up for Nora and wouldn’t even let her ask for help. That could only mean one thing. Julian really was out of the ER.

Olivia and I aren’t even there yet. How is that possible? Cordelia couldn’t make sense of it.

That made getting to the hospital even more urgent. “Step on it,” she told the driver. “Get us there as fast as

you can.”

Sienna was still stung by what Constance had said about her real grandmother, and resentment was festering inside her. “Dr. Blithe, Julian’s already out of the ER. There’s no rush anymore.”

Right then, her resentment hit its peak. Out of pure spite, she even thought Cordelia and Olivia shouldn’t bother saving him. Julian might as well hurry up and die.

The sooner he died, the sooner her own brother would get his shot at taking over the company. Then, she’d finally have a say, and Constance wouldn’t look down on her like this.

But the thought lasted only a second before Sienna snuffed it out. After all, she was the only girl in the family, and Constance doted on her. Julian was only her cousin, but he’d always gone easy on her growing up. Besides, he really was the best person to run things.

Cordelia caught the resentment in Sienna’s eyes and gave her a kindly smile. “Nobody knows Julian’s condition better than I do. Even if he’s out of the ER, he’ll be in the ICU, and his life is still in danger.

“I still need to drop everything and go see him. I won’t rest easy until I’m sure he’s out of the woods.”

Cordelia patted Sienna’s head fondly. “And don’t be mad at your grandma. She’s been through a lot today, and she’s in a bad mood. Somebody’s been getting in her ear. That’s the only reason she’d say something like that.

“You’re the only girl in the Weston family. You shouldn’t have to share her love with anyone, or the money either.”

Sienna leaned her head on Cordelia’s shoulder. “You’re the best, Dr. Blithe.”

Cordelia didn’t know what to say. Idiot. Did my whole point go right over her head?

Olivia, on the other hand, was genuinely worried about Julian. “Grandma, is Julian really out of the ER? Who brought him back?”

She and Cordelia both knew that with a condition like Julian’s, nobody but the two of them could have pulled him through.

Cordelia picked up her phone. “Let me call and find out.” She tried Gideon first, but he was still busy in the ER and didn’t have his phone on him, so the call went unanswered.

So she called Phil instead, and he answered right away. “Phil, Olivia and I are on our way to the hospital. Constance just told me Julian’s been stabilized and can be moved to the ICU. Is that true?”

Phil was all smiles, practically gushing. “It sure is. Just half an hour ago. You’re amazing, Dr. Blithe.”
