Chapter 264 His Father’s Name

Nora handed the reports to Gideon and pointed at one of the numbers. “Check this one against the old results. In medicine, one wrong digit can kill somebody.”
Gideon took the reports and looked at the number she was pointing to. Then, he frowned at her suspiciously. “This number looks fine to me.”
“Go pull the old reports and compare them yourself,” Nora said. “Then come back and tell me if it’s wrong.” She looked up at him. “By the way, your father’s name was Arthur Vance, wasn’t it?”
Gideon was still studying the number. When he suddenly heard her say his father’s name, he flinched and jerked his head up to stare at her.
When he met Nora’s searching look, his face darkened, and he denied it. “I’m an orphan.”
Nora frowned. She didn’t know why Gideon would deny it, or why he’d changed his name, but there had to be a secret behind it, one nobody else in the world knew about.
She looked at him calmly. “Fine, don’t admit it. But you should know that before Arthur Vance died, he got his hands on an azurewort plant to study.
“You don’t know what azurewort is, but I’m sure you know about the mutant orchid.”
Gideon frowned at her. “What are you getting at?”
He’d never heard of azurewort, but he knew all about the mutant orchid. Cordelia had bred it three years after his father died. It was the first mutant orchid in the world with so many medicinal uses.
If hers was the first, how did Dad have one before he died? And why would he call it azurewort? Gideon couldn’t make it add up.
Nora didn’t know the truth either. She had a hunch, but no proof. So she turned the question back on him. “What do you think I’m getting at?”
Gideon gave a cold laugh. “You’re saying my mentor killed Arthur Vance, took this azurewort of yours, renamed it the mutant orchid, and made her name off it?”
That was exactly what Nora meant, and it was the first thing that had crossed Gideon’s mind too.
But he quickly shook his head, and when he looked at her again, he was even more sure of himself. “Don’t take some guy who happens to have my last name, call him my father, and spin a story like that to turn me against my mentor.
“I believe in her. She’s not that kind of person. She’s famous, she saves lives, and nobody in medicine has better skills or better principles. She’d have no reason to steal azurewort from some small-time doctor.”
Nora tilted her head and raised an eyebrow. “I never said Arthur Vance was a doctor. But you knew. Looks like you know exactly who he is.”
Gideon felt like he’d walked right into a trap. His face darkened even more. He didn’t want to give himself
away.

“No. It was just a guess. I don’t know any Arthur Vance, and he’s not my father. And don’t feed me some soap-opera plot where I’ve been worshipping the woman who killed my dad. I’m not buying it!
“My mentor is the only family I have in this world. She’s the one person I’d trust with my life! So if you say anything like that again…”
He looked over at Julian lying in the bed. “Keep making my mentor and Olivia angry, and nobody will be able to save Julian.” With that, he turned to go.
Nora called after him, “Don’t forget to compare those numbers.”
Gideon had the urge to throw the reports in her face. But for some reason, he gripped them tighter instead and strode out.
Fifteen minutes later, Phil stood waiting at the entrance of the Blithe Institute Annex in a freshly pressed.
suit.
Reporters from around the area had heard the news and rushed over as fast as they could. The moment they saw Phil, the questions started flying.
“Doctor, is it true the CEO of the Weston Group is here in critical condition?”
Phil faced the cameras. “Yes. He was brought in around two or three this afternoon.”
“So how’s Mr. Weston doing now? Is he out of danger?”
“Mr. Weston’s condition was extremely serious. We sent in our very best doctors, but unfortunately…” Phil looked heartbroken.
The reporters pounced. “Are you saying they couldn’t save him? Has Mr. Weston passed away?” If so, they had the first scoop on the death of the richest man in the city. That meant a promotion and a raise for
sure.
Phil realized the reporters had gotten the wrong idea and quickly put on a big smile. “If it had been up to our doctors alone, we would have lost him. But thanks to Dr. Blithe’s tireless efforts, Mr. Weston is now out of danger.
“Honestly, for all the talent we’ve got here, none of us can hold a candle to Dr. Blithe. She’s incredible. She’s the greatest miracle healer of our time.”
There went the scoop. Still, any story about Julian, the richest man in the city, would do. After all, there was hardly ever any news about him.
“Dr. Blithe really is something,” a reporter said. “So could you tell us why Mr. Weston suddenly got so sick that he needed emergency care?
“Is it true what the earlier reports said, that it was from taking too much of a sexual stimulant? Did Mr. Weston take it himself, or did Mrs. Weston slip it to him?”
