Chapter 274 A Polite Eviction

Cordelia shot Nora a dark, icy look. Then, she went with the investigators, perfectly composed, as if she had nothing to hide.
Olivia was in a daze. She was panicking and couldn’t think straight. She pointed at Nora. “You can’t just take my grandma. You have to take her too! She doesn’t have a medical license, but she went into the ER anyway. She’s practicing medicine without a license!”
The investigators turned to look at Nora.
Simon quickly pulled a stack of certificates from his briefcase and handed them over. “These are all Ms. Sinclair’s credentials. Here’s her medical license, and here’s her board certification.”
The investigator looked them over, then told Olivia, “Her credentials check out. She’s fully licensed.”
Then, the investigators led Cordelia away. Phil, who’d been counting on his promotion, was taken in too, along with every other doctor involved.
Cordelia carried herself so calmly that some people started to doubt what Nora had said.
Olivia stood frozen in place. For a long, long time, she couldn’t pull herself together.
Only when Cordelia was out of sight did Olivia go weak. She stumbled a step, tears streaming down her face. “Grandma…”
Gideon caught her and spoke gently. “Don’t worry. Dr. Blithe will be fine. We have to believe in her.”
Olivia had never been in a spot like this. She was frantic and full of resentment, but she remembered what Cordelia had always taught her. She took a deep breath and swallowed the urge to scream at Nora.
She looked up at Nora. “Nora, once the investigation’s done, if it turns out you were wrong, you’re going to apologize to my grandma. You’ve blown this way out of proportion.”
Nora could see the hatred Olivia was trying so hard, and failing, to hide. She gave a faint smile. “An apology’s pretty meaningless, though. It’s just words. That wouldn’t be nearly enough to make you feel better, would it?”
Olivia clenched her jaw. “I know you were only thinking of everyone else, Nora. I’m not the type to keep pushing once I’ve been proven right. An apology will be enough.”
Nora gave a soft scoff. “You should be grateful your grandma kept you out of it. Otherwise, she wouldn’t be the only one they hauled off today. You’d be…”
She looked at Olivia and offered some sincere advice. “Playing the sweet little angel is fine. It’s not exactly ethical, but it’s not illegal either. Just don’t let the act slip. If you let all that hate eat at you, it’ll push you right over the line.”
Nora figured that now that Cordelia had fallen, she’d do everything she could to push Olivia to the top.
Olivia didn’t want to say another word to Nora. She’d reached the limit of her patience.

She turned to Constance, looking hurt, heartbroken, and completely sincere. “Grandma Weston, I’m so sorry. I didn’t know my grandma would do something like this. But she’d never hurt Julian.”
She truly never would have imagined that Cordelia would alter medical records and fake a long surgery, all to hold off on saving Julian and get leverage over Nora.
Constance hadn’t cracked a smile all day. She had no patience for Olivia now, and she was on her guard around both her and Cordelia. “Come by tomorrow and move your things out.”
Olivia’s eyes went wide with shock and panic. “Grandma Weston, are you throwing me out?”
Even so, Constance left Olivia some dignity. She didn’t like to burn bridges. She’d always believed in leaving the door open a crack.
“Oh, don’t put it like that, dear. You’ll make me feel like the bad guy, I watched you grow up. You’re like a granddaughter to me.
“I just can’t get past what your grandmother did. I’d hate to take it out on you and ruin what we have.
“Don’t worry. You’re still our family doctor, and I’m not firing you. Once Julian’s better and I have a little more time, I’ll invite you over for a visit.”
Constance had put it so smoothly that nobody could find a single thing to fault.
Nora raised an eyebrow as she listened. When it came to keeping up appearances, Constance’s sugarcoated talk was even smoother than Olivia’s.
In just a few sentences, Constance had made her position clear without openly falling out with Olivia. She’d even slipped in a little jab, making it plain that Cordelia was the reason Olivia had to go.
If Olivia wanted to be angry, she’d have to be angry at her grandmother for bringing this on them.
Constance had said it nicely, but Olivia knew things had changed.
Before, Constance had always told her to come by anytime and treat the place like home. Now, Constance would invite her over when she had the time.
That one word, invite, said it all. Constance was keeping her at arm’s length now, like an outsider.
With things spelled out that clearly, Olivia couldn’t shamelessly insist on staying. She agreed graciously. “All right. I’ll find some time to move my things. But I’ll need to make some calls and pull some strings for my grandma, so I might not make it as soon as tomorrow.”
“That’s fine,” Constance said. “If you’re too busy, I’ll have someone pack everything up and send it all back to you, down to the last item. That way, you won’t have to worry about little things like that, and you can focus on your grandmother.”
