Chapter 275 Drawing the Line
Constance turned her down flat. “He hasn’t woken up yet. Now isn’t a good time.”

She gave Olivia a long, hard look. “I hope that aphrodisiac cologne that set off Julian’s attack had nothing to do with your grandmother.”
“I’m sorry,” Olivia said, bowing her head to apologize once more. When Constance didn’t react, she left with Gideon.
Nora watched Constance send Olivia packing without a moment’s hesitation, and she raised an eyebrow. “Grandma, you’re really letting her go just like that? Aren’t you worried we’ll still need her to treat Julian later?”
She looked down at Constance and didn’t hide the truth about Julian’s condition. “The Lazarus pills can only bring him back this one time. They can’t cure him for good.”
When it came to treating Julian, Nora had always sensed that Cordelia and Olivia thought they held all the cards, and that it mattered to them a great deal.
Constance looked exhausted. “I’ve bent over backward for them for decades. I can’t keep doing it forever. Besides, they crossed a line I won’t let anyone cross.
“First, they used Julian to try to control me. Second, they schemed against you without caring one bit that you’re my granddaughter-in-law. They didn’t show me an ounce of respect.
“After they’ve gone this far, am I supposed to keep backing down? I’m not about to let you be treated like this, and Julian wouldn’t want that either.”
“I know,” Nora said. “I’ll go in and give him his medicine. Grandma, why don’t you go home and rest? Now that we have the medicine, he’ll be fine this time. We just have to wait for him to wake up.”
Constance said she would, then watched Nora go into the ICU.
Nora had a feeling Constance wouldn’t actually go home. Once she was inside, she opened the curtains and sat down by the bed. She ground a pill into powder, mixed it with a little water, and fed it to Julian one spoonful at a time.
Constance watched her, deeply moved. Then, she noticed the reporters still hadn’t left. “Our family has never liked this kind of thing,” she told them, “and we don’t like being splashed all over the internet. As long as the facts are clear, that’s enough.
“As for everything else you filmed today, report it truthfully. Leave our family out of it as much as you can, and focus on the real story. Just do your jobs.”
She added, “When you report on Julian’s condition, say he’s still in intensive care, and it’s not clear whether he’ll make it.”
Reporters who covered stories like this were no fools, and they knew exactly what Constance meant. She wanted as little coverage of the Westons as possible, ideally no footage of the family at all. They only had to report the truth of what had happened.

Rich people did tend to keep a low profile. With too much exposure, some criminal might get ideas.
Focusing on the real story meant blowing the lid off what was going on at the Blithe Institute Annex. A scandal involving Cordelia, one of the most famous doctors around, was explosive enough to bring their outlets a flood of clicks and land every reporter there a promotion and a raise.
And the Westons would be backing them on this story. The bond between the Westons and the Blithes was beginning to crack.
After Nora fed Julian the medicine, she waited a while, then checked his pulse. It was steady, and the toxin was under control. It wasn’t spreading to his organs anymore. Only then did she relax.
She looked up and saw Constance still waiting outside, so she went out. The reporters were gone. “Grandma, you’re still here?”
Constance looked worriedly through the glass at Julian. “There’s no rush. I’ll wait until Julian wakes
Nora tried to reassure her. “Don’t worry. Julian’s stable now. He can even be moved to a regular room.”
The truth was, there was no point keeping Julian in the ICU anyway. Conventional medicine couldn’t save him from an attack like this.
Hearing that put Constance’s mind at ease. She took Nora’s hand and held on tight. “Thank goodness you were here this time. I don’t know what would’ve happened to Julian without you.”
Nora’s expression cooled. “He had this attack because of me. If they hadn’t been out to get me, they never would’ve used me to set off his attack.”
This time, Julian really had been caught in the crossfire because of her.
Constance sighed. “Why would you blame yourself? Some people are just rotten. Today it was you, and tomorrow it could be someone else. The people to blame are the ones who want to hurt others.”
She looked up at Nora. “I’ll have someone look into this further. Don’t worry. This time, I won’t let anyone get away with hurting you.”
So much had happened today, with one twist after another. Constance wanted to get to the bottom of it and find out exactly who was stirring up trouble.
Nora nodded, “I’ll go find a doctor and get Julian moved to a regular room.”
Before long, Julian was settled in a VIP room.
Constance still hadn’t left. Julian showed no sign of waking up, and she couldn’t help asking Nora, “When is Julian going to wake up?”
“This attack took a lot out of him,” Nora said. “It did serious damage, so he won’t wake up anytime soon. It’ll be at least eight hours. Why don’t you go get some rest first?”
But Constance was too worried to leave. Nora stood behind her and started kneading her shoulders. “Let me give you a quick massage. It’ll help you relax.”
