Chapter 296 A Guard Dog Named Ever

“I heard you!” Julian’s car hurt from the pinching, and she looked really fierce. She’d seen right through him too, so he gave in.
Plus, he had no doubt she really would go find a boy toy.
Only then did Nora let go. She glared at him. “That’s the first time, so I’ll forgive you and let it go. But if there’s a second time, I’ll have divorce papers in front of you so fast your head will spin. Understand?”
Julian held the bouquet and nodded. “Understood.”
“Anyway, you can stop worrying,” Nora said. “I brought you back from the brink this time, and I can do it again. It’s only a matter of time. Olivia’s not the only one who can save you. I can too.
“So!” She raised her voice again. “Quit saying hurtful things like that and pretending it’s for my own good!”
Julian nodded again. “Got it, Mrs. Weston. I was wrong.”
Nora gave a little huff. “That’s more like it.”
Miles had watched the whole scene from the doorway, speechless.
Seeing Julian hug a bouquet of flowers while Nora pulled his ear, and then nod obediently like a henpecked husband, was downright surreal.
It was like watching a demon king turn into a cuddly bunny. Nora really was something else.
When they got back to the Weston estate, Harlan was waiting in the living room of the main house. He smiled when he saw them. “Julian, Nora, you’re back?”
He looked at Nora. “I hear Mr. Joss already flew home. So, Nora, did you close the deal?”
Nora gave Harlan a cool look. “It’s only evening. There’s plenty of time before tomorrow. You don’t have to come sit around waiting this early, Uncle Harlan.”
She nodded toward the door. “Besides, we’ve already got a guard dog. We don’t need another one.”
Harlan looked toward the door and saw a dog sitting there. His expression soured. Nora was calling him a guard dog who couldn’t wait to come take
up his
post.
Harlan was furious and wanted to fire back, but with Julian right there, he didn’t dare say anything. He just gave a cold snort.
“I only heard Julian was out of the hospital, so I came to see him. And I’m very eager to hear how
is going, Nora. After all, if you close it, the company stands to make a fortune.”
Julian said coldly, “Well, now you’ve seen me, Uncle Harlan, so you can go.”
He looked up at Harlan, who hadn’t budged. “I don’t need to have you shown out, do I?”
your deal
Harlan wasn’t naive enough to think Julian would have a servant politely show him out. More likely, Julian

would sic that dog on him and chase him off the property.

Harlan stood up and straightened his clothes. “You just got out of the hospital, so get some rest. I’ll come see you again tomorrow morning.”
He looked around the living room of the main house and smiled. “I’m in no hurry. Tomorrow, you might be the ones getting shown/out.”
According to Harlan’s sources, Nora hadn’t closed the deal with Joss, and Joss had already flown home. That meant Nora didn’t stand a chance anymore. She was only putting on a show to stall and squeeze in one more night here.
As far as Harlan was concerned, the Weston Group and the Weston estate were already in the bag.
He looked at Constance, whose face had gone stony. “Mother, I won’t bother you any more today. I’ll come keep you company tomorrow.”
Then, he pointed at the family portrait on the living room wall. It showed Julian’s late grandfather and Constance, their son and daughter-in-law, and Julian, three generations together.
“Mother, you might want to pack while you’ve got the time today. Otherwise, when I come for you tomorrow, the servants will have to do it, and it’d be a shame if a picture got broken or something.
“My mother’s portrait is moving in too.”
Harlan’s words made Constance shake with rage. She pointed at the door. “Get the hell out of here!”
All these years, Harlan had never shown much ambition, and he’d always treated Constance with respect.
But the moment word got out about Julian’s illness and how little time he had left, Harlan couldn’t hide his ambition anymore. The respect and devotion he’d faked all this time were gone.
He even wanted to hang his mother’s memorial portrait in the main house. That was the same as throwing Constance out and putting his dead mother, her late husband’s mistress, in her place as the lady of the house!
Harlan didn’t budge. He just kept fussing with his jacket, in no hurry at all.
“Grandma, why bother being polite to him?” Nora said. Then, she called out, “Ever, show our guest out.”
Ever was the German shepherd by the door. Constance had named him that because she wanted Julian to be around forever, safe and healthy.
Ever was smart and understood people well. The moment he heard the command, he charged at Harlan, barking.
“Holy shit!” Harlan jumped in terror and took off running as fast as his legs could carry him.
