Chapter 298 A Thirty-Year-Old Debt

None of it came as much of a surprise, but Cordelia still scoffed. “That Sinclair girl really does have some skill. She actually got Julian awake and out of the hospital.”

Then, she asked Olivia, “What else has Nora been up to?”

“Nothing much,” Olivia said. Then, something came back to her. “Oh, wait. I heard Nora made a bet with Harlan. She has to close the Joss deal. If she can’t, Julian has to give up his place as heir, and Grandma Weston and the rest of them have to move out of the main house.”

“Oh?” That got Cordelia’s attention. “Is that so?”

Olivia nodded. “And the deadline’s tomorrow morning. If Nora hasn’t closed the deal by then, they have to move out of the main house. From what I’ve heard, she still hasn’t closed it, and Joss has already flown home.”

Cordelia gave a cold laugh. “Of course she couldn’t close it.”

“Grandma?” Olivia looked at her, confused.

Cordelia looked at Olivia, who’d been sheltered all her life and was still so sweet and innocent. She thought it over for a moment, then said, “Thirty years ago, I was on a research trip with my students when we happened to come across the family of Joss’s boss. They were in serious danger, and I saved their lives. They owed me.

“All I did was casually mention that the Pierce Group would make a better partner.”

Olivia was stunned. “So that’s why they warned Julian there’d be no deal if he walked out of the meeting, even if Grandma Weston stepped in herself?”

Cordelia simply nodded. “Mm-hmm.”

Olivia went quiet.

Cordelia watched her for a moment. “What is it? You think I was wrong?”

Olivia shook her head quickly. “No.”

She was never surprised by what Cordelia did to other people. That was how she’d been raised. But this was the Westons. This was Julian. And that didn’t sit right with her.

Cordelia didn’t like how Olivia was taking this. “So what are you planning to do?” she asked, her tone hardening.

“What?” Olivia didn’t quite follow.

Cordelia looked at her and sighed. “Nora’s bound to figure out why the deal fell through, and I’ll make sure someone tips her off anyway. Tomorrow morning, go to the Weston estate. When Harlan tries to kick them out of the main house, you step

in.”

She didn’t spell it all out. “Do you understand what to do now, Olivia?”

At 8:00 the next morning, Nora and Julian came downstairs together.

“Good morning, Julian. Good morning, Nora.” They’d barely reached the bottom of the stairs when Harlan greeted them from the sofa, all smiles.

Sienna looked awkward and a little scared as she turned to Julian. “Julian, I… Dad made me come.”

Olivia was there too. She stood up with a small smile. “Good morning, Julian. Good morning, Nora.”

Nora gave her a cool nod. “You’re here early.”.

Olivia glanced at Julian, who’d given her nothing more than an indifferent nod himself. “With my grandma away, I have a lot to take care of, so I came by early. You and Grandma Weston weren’t up yet, and I didn’t want to disturb anyone.”

Nora hummed. “Go ahead, then. You can have the staff help you pack. We’re going to have breakfast, so we’ll leave you to it.”

She slipped her arm through Julian’s and headed for the dining room.

When Harlan saw that nobody was paying him any attention, he got up too. “Olivia, since you came so early, why don’t you join us for breakfast?”

Olivia glanced cautiously at Julian and Nora. “Nora didn’t invite me, though. I don’t think that would be very…”

Harlan cut her off bluntly. “She doesn’t need to. I’m the one in charge of the main house now.”

“What?” Olivia looked shocked. “I… What do you mean? Aren’t Grandma Weston and Julian in charge of the main house?”

Harlan kept walking as he talked. “Nora bet me she could close the Joss deal, and she didn’t. So the main

house is mine to run now.”

He glanced back at Olivia and added, “The heir, the CEO seat at the Weston Group, all of that’s going to Theo too. He’s always had a thing for you. What do you say?”

Harlan was angling for a marriage between the two families. He wanted to know if she’d consider Theo.

Unlike Constance, he wasn’t about to pass up the heiress to a medical dynasty like the Blithes and settle for someone like Nora, who came from nothing, brought nothing to the table, and wasn’t even presentable.

Olivia looked at Julian again, hoping for something, but he acted like he hadn’t heard a word and simply pulled out a chair for Nora. Olivia forced a stiff smile and didn’t answer.

Harlan headed straight for the head of the table and pulled out the chair. He was halfway into it when he froze. Slowly, he looked up and found Julian staring at him with cold, dark eyes, and a shiver ran down his spine.

He straightened up. “It’s only a little while longer. I can wait. You sit, Julian. Go ahead, sit.”

Julian gave a faint hum and sat down with such effortless grace that he looked like a king taking his throne,
