Sienna also knew that cheering Nora on at a moment like this was the best way to prove her loyalty.

Julian was pleased to hear her count Nora as family. He gave an approving hum. “Since you’re calling her family now, I’ll believe you’re on my side.”

Nora patted Sienna on the head. “Since you count me as family, the next time you do something stupid, I won’t chew you out so hard. And if you ever need protecting, I’ve got your back.”

To Sienna, that pat felt way too much like petting a dog, and she hated it. But right now, she had loyalty to

prove.

So she looked up at Nora with a sweet, obedient smile and nodded, “Okay. You’ll protect me, Nora.”

Olivia couldn’t believe it. Sienna usually followed her around and fought her battles for her, and now she’d cozied up to Nora like a lapdog, practically begging for protection. Olivia’s expression soured. “Sienna,” she said softly.

Sienna shot Olivia a meaningful look. “Olivia, you’re with me, right?”

Olivia forced a stiff smile. “I trust Julian. And I’m sure Uncle Harlan won’t hold Nora to it and make things hard for her.”

Harlan was genuinely angry now. “Olivia, I’m serious. Stop saying someone my age shouldn’t give the younger generation a hard time. Isn’t that what you young people call guilt-tripping?

“But since it’s you, and we might be family someday, I’ll let it slide this time.”

If Harlan hadn’t been angling for a marriage with the Blithes, he would’ve told Olivia flat out to quit playing the saint and mind her own business.

Olivia looked hurt, as if he’d really put her on the spot. She pressed her lips together and looked up at Julian, hoping for some comfort.

Unfortunately for her, Julian didn’t spare her so much as a glance. He was too busy gently wiping the corner of Nora’s mouth. “Where are you headed later?” he asked.

“We’ll see,” Nora said. “Things keep piling up, and work’s been crazy lately too.”

Speaking of work, she remembered that Preston, the movie star, had apparently stood up for her publicly these past couple of days,

Harlan turned to one of the maids. “Go ask Mrs. Constance Weston to come down.

“And tell her I’m done waiting. They can start moving their things out right now. Otherwise, when time’s up, they’re not taking anything out of the main house except their phones and the clothes on their backs!”

He was still bitter about getting chased by that dog yesterday, so he made a point of adding, “Especially not that damn dog! I’m having it put down tonight, and then I’m throwing myself a party!”

But the main house staff didn’t answer to anyone else, especially not when it came to passing along a

message that could get them fired. So the maid stayed right where she was. “Mr. Harlan, we still work for Mrs. Constance Weston and Mr. Weston. I’m sorry, but I can’t take orders from you.”

Each household on the estate had its own staff, paid out of the family’s shared accounts. Still, the other households liked to bring in a few of their own people and pay them out of pocket.

The main house was different. Nobody from the other households had ever managed to plant a single person there, and the staff’s loyalty was absolute.

Harlan scowled. “Fine. I won’t make this hard on you. Once I move into the main house, I’ll just fire you.”

He grabbed his phone and called the butler at his villa. “Round up the staff and get over to the main house. Anything I don’t want, toss it outside. They can keep that junk as a parting gift.”

“Not a good idea?” Harlan nearly shouted when he heard the butler’s reply. “I could’ve kicked them out with nothing. I’m being generous here! How is that not a good idea?

“I’m paying you to be my butler. If you don’t like it, you can get the hell out! You’ve got 10 minutes to get over here!”

Harlan kept shouting into the phone, but neither Julian nor Nora so much as looked up.

The staff brought out fruit after the meal, including grapes, which Nora loved. But she didn’t like the skins, and she didn’t want to spit them out either.

So Julian peeled them for her one by one, each grape plump and glistening.

He peeled, and she ate. And for every grape she ate, she fed him one in return. It was all so easy and natural, as if they’d been married for over a decade.

Olivia watched it all play out, sick with jealousy. It hurt, and the hurt quickly turned to hatred.

Julian had always been so cool and distant, untouchable, the kind of man she’d once thought no one could ever reach. Now, he’d stepped right down off that pedestal for Nora, all gentleness and devotion. It was everything she’d ever dreamed of having!

About 10 minutes later, Hollis Tuttle, the butler who ran Harlan’s villa, walked in with about 20 maids and security guards in tow. “Mr. Harlan.”

They lined up behind Harlan, waiting for his orders.

Julian looked up and gave Hollis a cool glance. That was enough to make Hollis duck his head in fear, though he didn’t dare say a word.

When Harlan saw his people just standing around, he barked at them, “What are you standing there for Start moving things! Anything I don’t like, get it out of here!”
