Nora didn’t want to guess at any of it. She’d wait until Wren woke up.

The recovery room stayed quiet for a long time.
Nora was still going through the security footage when Wren made a small sound and opened her eyes
Nora put the phone down fast. “Don’t move around. You’ve just come out of surgery. You need to rest.”
Wren lay still and managed a weak smile. “I’m sorry. Dragging you all the way out here.”
Nora glared at her without any heat behind it. “We’re family. You don’t have to thank me.”
Wren put a hand on her stomach and lowered her eyes. Her lips pressed into a flat line, and the rims of her eyes went red.
Nora watched all of it. “It was ectopic, and you were bleeding. Be more careful next time.”
Wren smiled so Nora wouldn’t worry. “I know. It wasn’t meant to stay.”
Nora asked her, “Where’s Damon?”
Wren looked at the phone on the nightstand. “Working, probably.”
Nora picked it up and put it in her hand. “Call him. What kind of husband isn’t here when his wife is in surgery?”
Wren looked at the screen for a while, then took it and unlocked it.
Three hours earlier she’d called him three times and he hadn’t picked up once. The log was sitting right there. She called him again anyway.
“Damon…”
She’d barely gotten the name out when a soft woman’s voice came down the line. “Hello? Damon’s in the shower. Is there something I can help you with?”
Every bit of color went out of Wren’s face.
The voice kept going. “He doesn’t have your number saved. Leave me a name and I’ll have him call you back ‘when he’s finished.”
Wren hung up in a panic, and the phone dropped onto the bed.
Nora frowned at her. “What did Damon say?”
Wren smiled at her. “He’s traveling for work. He’ll be back tomorrow.”
Nora wasn’t letting her get away with that. “I heard the whole thing. That was a woman’s voice. He’s cheating on you.”

“Nora.” Wren had no color left and her eyes were red. “Please stop.
No sighed. “If a man isn’t good to you, get a different one. There’s no reason to swallow this.
“He doesn’t even know you were pregnant. You’ve just come out of surgery, and he’s standing in some other woman’s apartment…”
She was only halfway through it when the tears started coming down Wren’s face one after another.
Nora stopped herself. “I’ll drop it. Don’t cry. You’ve had surgery and you can’t get worked up.”
The first time around, Nora had never known about any of this, the ectopic pregnancy or the surgery. Wren had reached out this time, and the reason was probably that Nora marrying Julian had given her a little ground to stand on.
Nora kept the part about the hysterectomy to herself for now, because Wren didn’t need it on top of everything else.
In that other life Wren had never had children, and this was most likely why. So the target might not have been Nora at all. It might have been Wren.
Nora looked her in the eye. “Wren, I’m a Weston now. Whether you divorce him or not, if you need anything you come to me. Don’t put up with one more thing for the sake of a worthless man.”
Wren didn’t want her worrying, so she made herself smile and nodded. “All right.”
Nora stayed until she fell asleep, then hired a private nurse she trusted, went through the instructions with her carefully, and left.
On the way out she thought about going straight at Damon, and then she let it go. A few hours wouldn’t change anything, and the last thing Wren needed was Damon turning up at the hospital.
Nora got back to the Weston estate a little after dark.
“Mrs. Weston.”
The staff greeted her one after another, and every one of them looked at her strangely.
She found Bess at the door. “Is Julian home?”
“Not yet, ma’am. You… have a visitor.”
“Who?” Nora went through to the living room expecting Victor, or possibly her grandmother.
“Nora. It’s been a long time.”
She’d barely cleared the doorway when a tall, good-looking man stood up and greeted her like it was the best moment of his week.
His eyes stayed fixed on her, and a child could have read what was behind them.
