Chapter 53 Into the Fountain
You.” Nothing in Nora’s face moved.
Trevor nodded, delighted. “I came to find you. Can we talk?”
Constance said, “Take it out to the garden.”
Nora thought about it and went.
The Weston garden ran on for acres, full of expensive plantings clipped into shapes, and it held up next to any botanical garden people paid admission to see.
Trevor couldn’t help looking around before he turned to her. “Seeing how well you’ve married, I probably shouldn’t have come.”
Nora raised an eyebrow. “You say that, and yet here you are. Go on. What do you want? Money?”
They hadn’t spoken in three years, and she wasn’t about to believe he’d turned up at this door for nothing.
Trevor gave her a look. “My family isn’t the Westons, but we’re not so far gone that I’d come borrowing from you.”
“Right,” Nora said. “The Lanes have a little money. And a real fondness for throwing it at people.”
After the letter went out over the announcements, his mother had put $100,000 in front of her, told her to stay away from him, and tried to have her transferred to another school.
Trevor went red and hurried to explain. “She only did that because she was worried about my grades. She doesn’t get involved in my life anymore.”
Nora laughed lightly. “Enough. Say whatever you came to say. I’m busy and I don’t have time to reminisce.”
His phone lit up, and he darkened the screen.
He looked up at her with everything he had. “The truth is I’ve always felt this way about you. I know they forced you into marrying Julian Weston. Let me take you away. We’ll live abroad, get married, have children. What do you say?”
“Take me away?” It was the funniest thing she’d heard all week.
Trevor nodded hard. “Yes.
“Back then I was worried about your grades, so I never let myself say yes to you. I told myself we’d get into the same university and be together, and then we didn’t. I’ve regretted it ever since.
“I told myself that if you were happy I’d stay away. But they forced you into this marriage, so you must still…”
Nora put a hand up. “Stop right there.”
Trevor stared at her. “Nora, I came here to get you out of this.”

That pulled a laugh out of her with nothing friendly in it. “Let me clear something up. I never liked know better than anyone what actually happened with that letter in high school.
“Second, nobody forced me to marry Julian. I married him because I wanted to.”
Trevor shook his head. “That can’t be true. You almost killed yourself over me back then.”
you
You
Nora came close to rolling her eyes. “Trevor, get a grip. I was up on the school roof memorizing vocabulary where it was quiet. How did that turn into the trying to die over you? Listen to yourself.” The story had come out of her classmates, like everything else about that year.
“You don’t have to admit it,” Trevor said. “I went to the Sinclairs and asked. Mandy used your grandmother against you. That’s the only reason you agreed to marry him.
“You don’t love him at all. You still love me, don’t you?”
Nora was out of patience. “Open your camera. Front-facing.”
He had no idea why, but he did it.
Then he brightened. “Is this a selfie? Are we posting it so everybody from school knows we’re together?”
Nora’s smile went cold. “It’s a mirror. Take a good look at your own face, and then explain to me how you have the nerve to compare yourself to Julian Weston. You think I’d want garbage like you over a man like him?”
“You…” Trevor came up out of the chair, then pushed the anger back down. “I understand. You’re using him to hurt me.”
Nora pulled out her phone, found Julian’s photo in her camera roll, and held it up in front of him. “Get a good look at him.”
It was the picture from the night before. Her hands had been shaking and it had come out blurred, and even so, what came through the screen was a man out of a different world entirely.
“My husband is out of focus in that photo and he’s still a mile out of your league. Never mind that the Westons are the richest family in the country, and their money is more than the Lanes would earn in ten lifetimes.
“So do you still think I want you instead of him?”
Trevor looked wounded. “It isn’t Julian Weston you want. It’s his money. Am I wrong?”
Nora looked at him, unmoved. “Is there a difference?”
Trevor came at her, worked up. “If it’s only the money, then you still want me. Come away with me and we can… agh!”
He never finished. Nora put a foot in his chest and sent him backward into the fountain.
Trevor thrashed in the water and swallowed a couple of mouthfuls before he got his feet under him, and by the time he was upright he was soaked through and looked ridiculous.
“Nora!” It came out as a roar.
