Reborn to Dodge the Bad Marriage novel Chapter 61

Chapter 61 Caught Together

Nara turned to look at Wren. Whatever color had crept back into her face was gone again.

“That’s Damon in there, isn’t it?” Her voice dropped flat and cold. “And that’s Fiona Nash with him. The one he never got over.”

The voice had struck her as familiar, and now she placed it. She had heard it once before, at Wren’s funeral. in her first life.

She had used Wren’s phone to call Damon, told him Wren was dead, and asked him to come to the service.

Damon had said Wren pulled the same stunt every time, threatening to kill herself just to drag him home, and that he was sick of it. If she was actually dead, he’d said, he would finally get some peace.

Wren bit down on her lip and shook her head. “That isn’t him. You misheard. Let’s go.”

She took Nora by the arm and tried to steer her toward the elevators.

The voices inside the room started up again.

Fiona’s voice came through bright and clear. “Damon, shouldn’t you be home with her?”

“She’s a grown woman,” Damon said. “She doesn’t need babysitting.”

“But she called you yesterday. What if something’s wrong?”

“Nothing’s wrong.” His tone didn’t change at all.

“I’m so sorry. You’re only here because of me and the baby, and I hate that I’m putting you through this. Ah!”

The door flew open under Nora’s boot and banged off the wall. Fiona shrank into Damon’s chest, shaking.

Damon’s head came up. “Who the hell are you? What do you think you’re…”

Nora’s hand was already moving.

The slap caught him full across the face and snapped his head sideways before he got the rest of the question out.

“You piece of shit!”

Nora spat the words and swung again.

Damon had no idea who she was. The first hit had scrambled him, and he was still catching up when the second one landed.

Nora’s eyes moved past him to the bed. “Oh. And there’s the bitch.”

A cheater and a homewrecker came as a set, and so did the slaps.

Nora reached past him to drag Fiona out from behind his shoulder.

Damon snapped out of it and caught her wrist. “What kind of lunatic kicks in a door and starts hitting

ople?”

“The kind who came here for a cheater and his mistress.” Nora tore her wrist free and slapped Fiona without! a second of hesitation.

Fiona pressed a hand to her cheek, and then she spotted Wren in the doorway. “Damon, it’s Wren. Wren brought her here.”

Damon wasn’t getting anywhere with Nora, and Fiona’s words turned his head toward the door.

“Wren!”

He crossed the room in three strides and hauled her inside by the arm.

A slap cracked through the room.

It was loud enough to turn every head.

Nora hadn’t touched Fiona again. A pregnant woman got exactly one slap out of her.

Then whose slap was that?

Nora looked up and found Wren’s head still turned to one side from the force of it.

Damon had stumbled back two steps and stopped there, frozen.

The room went silent.

“You son of a bitch!”

Rage tore through Nora and she went straight for him.

Wren caught her arm. “Nora, don’t.”

“He hit you, Wren! You just…”

Wren managed a smile for her. “It’s fine. Call it payment for the one you gave him.”

Nora was still shaking with it, and Wren’s voice dropped to something close to begging. “Let me handle this myself.”

Nora was furious, but Wren’s smile was so thin and so hopeless that it took the fight right out of her.

In her first life, the depression had ended with Wren dead, and Nora was terrified of watching that ending ‘arrive early.

Nora stepped aside. “Fine. But if he puts a hand on you again, I’ll kill him.”

Wren gave a small nod and turned to Damon. “Fiona’s pregnant. Isn’t she?”

Damon studied her. They had been apart two, maybe three days, and she had already lost weight he could see. Her face had no color in it, and the print of his hand showed plain across her cheek.

“Yes, she’s pregnant…”

When didn’t wait for the rest. Her hand came up and caught him across the face.

She had nothing left in her, so the blow carried no weight and barely made a sound.

It landed like a thunderclap all the same, and the room went dead quiet.

Nora could hardly believe what she had just watched.

Wren had grown up in a house where the sons came first, and she had learned early to keep her head down and her voice soft. Anyone who met her could tell she was easy to push around and would never push back.

And she had just hit Damon across the face.

Nora watched it with real satisfaction. “Do it again, Wren. Twice more.”

Damon’s eyes went cold on her. “You got your hit in. Now stay away from Fiona. She’s pregnant and she can’t take you coming after her. And one more thing.”
