Chapter 62 I Want Out
en said it them, one word at a time. “Damon, I want a divorce.”
The second it was out, she took Nora’s hand. “Nora, let’s go.”
She walked past Damon without slowing.
Damon shifted like he might follow.
Fiona’s voice wobbled behind him. “Damon, my stomach hurts. Is something wrong with the baby?”
Nora walked Wren back to her own room, and Damon never came after them. He hadn’t even noticed the hospital gown she was wearing, or thought to ask what was wrong.
The door clicked shut and Wren’s legs went out from under her.
“Wren!” Nora caught her under the arms and got her onto the bed.
Wren managed a thin laugh to calm her down. “I’m fine. The walk wore me out, that’s all.”
Nora propped a pillow behind her and pressed two fingers, to her wrist. Her pulse ran thin and fast, worn down by everything she had been holding in.
“Are you really going through with it?” Nora asked. “The divorce?”
Wren huffed a laugh. “What else is there? He’s having a baby with her. What exactly am I holding on for?”
”
Damon was cold all the way through, and nothing she had ever done had thawed him.
She didn’t love him anymore. She didn’t want him anymore.
Nora took her hand. “Whatever you decide, I’m behind you. But you come to me if you need anything, and don’t you dare worry about being a burden.”
Wren squeezed her fingers back. “You and Julian make it work, all right?”
Nora had nothing to say to that.
It was a tall order from where she was standing, since he had gone out running with Olivia in matching workout gear.
She wasn’t in the mood to deal with him.
Wren read her face and guessed. “You two had a fight?”
Nora’s mouth twisted. “No. When have I ever had a fight with anybody?”
She held up a fist. “I don’t argue. I hit. If he makes me mad enough, I’ll just kill him.”
Wren laughed at her. “Like I don’t know you. Of course you had a fight. What was it about?”
“There was no fight. He’s not the type to give me one.” Nora waved it off. “Stop worrying about me and start

worrying about your own health for once.”
voice turned serious. “You do have an ectopic pregnancy. That part is real. But you were stable, it wasn’t anmergency, and the doctors here grabbed the wrong ultrasound report and told you they were taking
your uterus.
“That’s insane. A hospital that size does not make that kind of mistake.
“So I’m reporting them, and I’m going to…”
Wren cut her off. “Nora, let it go. They didn’t do it on purpose.”
Nora’s brows drew together. “Wren, that’s not a small mistake.”
Wren’s face eased. “Nothing happened in the end. I don’t want to fight it. All I want is to get out of here, get the divorce done, and stop thinking about the rest of it.”
“You know something.” Nora’s eyes sharpened on her.
Wren shook her head. “No. It takes years to train a doctor, and nobody meant any harm. I don’t want the trouble. I want the divorce.”
Nora clearly wasn’t buying it, so Wren tried again with a smile. “Stop worrying. It’s late. Go home.”
Wren knew exactly who was behind it. It was Damon.
He was close with the people who ran the hospital. Without a word from him, nobody here would have swapped an ultrasound and put her down for a hysterectomy.
Bernard Winter, Damon’s grandfather, was fond of her and wouldn’t hear a word about a divorce. That was the whole problem.
So Damon had arranged a mistake instead, and it cleared the way for Fiona.
Warren, who ran the place, had already spelled out where the hospital stood. Nora was the one who had operated on her.
If Wren went after the hospital, they would report Nora for practicing without a license.
She wasn’t going to drag Nora down with her, so she would let it go.
Nora couldn’t budge her and didn’t push it. If Wren wouldn’t file a complaint, there was another way to handle it.
She had Wren transferred to the hospital where Rosalind was, into the same room, and stayed another ten minutes while Victor called and called, telling her to come home.
Only then did she drive back to the Sinclair house.
It was almost eight by the time she pulled in.
She parked in the courtyard and found Victor, Yvette, and Mandy all waiting at the front door.
Nora raised an eyebrow. “What’s this? The whole family turned out to welcome me?”

Victor was craning past her at the Ferrari, waiting for a second door to open. Nobody got out.
He frowned. “Where’s Julian?”
“Working late,” Nora said. “He’s not coming.”
Victor’s face went hard. “Tonight was the whole point. You come home for your first dinner as a married couple and you show up alone?”
Nora shrugged. “If I’m not welcome, I’ll leave now.”
