Reborn to Dodge the Bad Marriage novel Chapter 63

Chapter 63 He Came Anyway

a didn’t lift her head from her plate. “We’re fighting. We’re not speaking. Can’t help you.”

Victor frowned. “Every married couple fights. You make up in bed and it’s over with. Go home, smooth it out, put a word in his ear.

“It isn’t a hard thing to do.”

Nora’s expression didn’t move. “There’s no making up in bed and there’s no word in his ear, because there’s another woman.”

She raised her eyes to Victor and smiled. “You know how fast we got married. I don’t love him and he doesn’t love me. Why would he listen to a word I say?”

Yvette’s eyes widened. “It’s been three days. He won’t even keep up appearances?”

Mandy chewed on the end of her fork. “Nora, are you making this up? Julian doesn’t have another woman Is he sick or something?”

Mandy turned it over in her head. Julian, with another woman?

She didn’t believe it for a second.

Nora hummed, which was as much confirmation as anyone was getting.

Mandy scoffed. “I don’t buy it. He hasn’t had so much as a rumor in years. There’s no other woman.”

Nora shot her a look. “What, do you live inside his head? You seem awfully sure about his business.”

Mandy sounded completely sure of herself. “Something big has happened to him. That’s why you’re pretending there’s another woman.”

Nora couldn’t be bothered to argue. “Sure. You’ve got it. He’s dying and I’m about to be a widow.”

Victor snapped at her. “Don’t talk like that.”

Mandy’s eyes lit up. She put her fork down, left the dining room, and went out to the courtyard.

Yvette finished half her soup before she followed.

Mandy grabbed Yvette’s hand the moment she came out and kept her voice low. “Mom, he’s in a hospital somewhere. They’re working on him right now.

“He isn’t going to make it. That’s the only reason Nora would say a thing like that.

“It won’t be long now. He dies, the Weston fortune comes apart, and Adrian is the richest man in the country.”

Yvette swept a look around the courtyard, then checked through the glass. Nora was still at the table, eating quietly, and only then did Yvette relax.

She glared at Mandy. “Think it all you want. Don’t say it out loud.”

Mandy’s mouth twisted. “I’m happy. And I’m done sucking up to Nora. I hate her.”

“P up with it a while longer,” Yvette said. “Once you’ve gotten the Weston money out of her, and whatever the company is sitting on, you can stop.”

“The second he’s dead, I’m finished pretending.” Mandy still wasn’t happy about it.

A horn sounded twice at the gate.

An engine came growling up the drive behind it, and headlights swung across them both.

Mandy threw an arm over her eyes against the high beams. “Who the hell drives like that?/If you’re blind, donate your eyes to somebody who…”

The driver’s door opened and Julian got out. Even in the dark, the cold coming off him was unmistakable.

Mandy’s face changed. She dragged a smile onto it. “Julian.”

Nobody in that family used his first name, and hearing it from Mandy earned her a second look. He nodded then, cold. “Where’s Nora?”

Mandy pointed toward the dining room. “Inside, eating.

“Julian, how are you even here? I thought you were in a hospital…”

Yvette tugged at her sleeve, and his stare finished the job. Mandy scrambled. “Nora said you were dying and that’s why you couldn’t come to dinner with her. That’s the only reason I asked.”

Julian didn’t answer. He turned to the trunk and lifted out the gifts he had brought for the Sinclairs.

Yvette waited until he was inside before she leaned in. “What was that? He looks perfectly fine.”

Mandy had no idea either. “How should I know? The way Nora was talking, I thought he was on a table somewhere.”

“Forget whether he’s dying,” Yvette said. “Stop picking at Nora the way you used to and start being nice to her. A girl who grew up without a mother is starving for someone to love her, and girls like that will believe anything. Get her there and she’ll do whatever you ask.”

Inside, the meal went on.

Victor was still going at Nora when Julian walked in, and he was out of his chair in an instant. “Mr. Weston, you made it.”

Julian glanced at Nora, who hadn’t moved from her chair, and nodded. “Work ran long. Sorry I’m late.”

“Not at all, not at all,” Victor said. “A man like you is busy. We understand.”

Victor nudged Nora to get up, greet Julian, and take the bags out of his hands.

Nora didn’t so much as glance at him. She turned a little further away in her seat.

Out of sight, out of mind.

Victor hurried over to take the bags himself, laughing it off. “I spoiled her rotten. She’s stubborn and she
