Chapter 66 She Kissed Him First
Juan had never married her, though, and that told Nora one thing. He didn’t want Olivia.
Still, picturing the way Olivia looked at him set her teeth on edge, and it made her furious.
She had no business feeling any of it.
In her first life, plenty of women had wanted Adrian and gone after his bed.
None of it had ever bothered her. She had arranged some of them herself.
With Julian, she wasn’t herself at all.
Hold on. Do I actually like him?
The thought had barely surfaced before she shook her head hard to get rid of it.
She turned to him. “Okay. I believe you. It’s finished, and I’m really not mad.”
Julian took that in. “Last night I was in the study on a call. Working.”
“Right,” Nora said.
The car stopped at an intersection with 60 seconds left on the red.
Julian looked over at her. “I’m still mad.”
}
“Huh?” Nora nearly laughed. He’s telling me he’s mad?
He laid it out with total seriousness. “You didn’t trust me. That made me angry, and I’m still angry.”

The look on his face was so grave that she apologized just as seriously. “I’m sorry. Next time I’ll watch until the end, and from now on I’ll trust you.”
“I’m still angry,” he said.
Her temper came right back and she glared at him. “Don’t push it, Julian. Some of this is on you. You’re the one who handled it badly and made me angry in the first place. You have the nerve to be mad at me, and now an apology isn’t good enough? Keep it up and one of us isn’t getting out of this marriage alive.”
“You could just make a fuss over me,” Julian said.
One sentence, and all the fight in Nora had nowhere left to go.
What finished her was his face. He said it without a flicker, cold and dead serious, the way somebody else would read a clause out of a contract.
He wore the gravest expression in the world and used it to say the least proud thing she had ever heard.
It didn’t help that he was unfairly good-looking while he said it.
Against that combination, Nora had no defense at all.

His face fell a little. “Is that a no?”
Noa twisted her fingers together and kept her eyes forward. “Light’s green. You can go.”
Julian pulled away from the intersection, and the cabin went quiet.
The Weston estate started on the other side of that light.
Neither of them spoke again until the car reached the courtyard gate.
Julian came around to open her door and stood there looking at her. “I’m still angry about Trevor. He said he would wait for you to come back to him, and you never told him no.”
Nora climbed out of the car. “Uh-huh.”
It was nowhere near the reaction he wanted.
Julian frowned at her back, and he reached out to pull her in, but his hand never got there.
Nora had already spun around, gone up on her toes, and kissed him fast on the cheek.
“Stop being mad.”
It was over in a second, barely more than a brush, and it left something behind in him that wasn’t going to
go away.
She tried to bolt the moment it was done, but Julian caught her around the waist, hauled her back in, and kissed her on the mouth.
He had no idea what he was doing. The kiss came out rushed and clumsy, like he had never done it before.
He bumped and fumbled and left her lips stinging. Her knees went weak anyway, and she ended up folded soft against his chest.
Olivia had heard the car and come downstairs delighted, straight out the front door to meet them. “Jules… the two of you… you can’t do that.”
The words died as she took in the pair of them locked together in the doorway, and the color drained straight out of her face.
Nora went hot with embarrassment and pushed her way out of his arms.
Julian pulled her straight back in, tipped her chin up with two fingers, and kissed her swollen mouth again.
Only then did he look at Olivia. “Is this what you meant?”
Olivia looked like she might be sick. “You can’t do this.”
A second earlier Nora had been mortified. Thick skin or not, being caught kissing had gotten to her.
Then she saw Olivia standing there like a wife who had walked in on her husband, and it struck her as funny and infuriating at the same time.

“Miss Blithe, we hired you as a family doctor. We pay you to treat him, not to supervise our marriage.”
Olivia came back to herself and realized how far out of line she had gone. What drove it home was how cold Julian’s eyes were on her.
Her hands closed into fists. “I only meant that in a public place, people ought to be careful how they look.”
