Nara caught that. So she called them matching on purpose. She wanted me to get the wrong idea.

Nora scoffed. “Do you remember what I said to you this morning?”

Olivia’s hands curled up tight. “We said a lot of things. I don’t know which part you mean, Nora.”

Nora pointed at her. “This outfit. Ring a bell?”

There was no playing dumb after that, so Olivia nodded. “Yes.”

Nora wasn’t letting her slide past it. “Repeat what he told you. Word for word.”

Julian had come to stand at her shoulder, plainly there to back her up.

Anger flared in Olivia again, and she had no choice left but the truth. “Julian said the clothes were yours. offered to return them. He told me to throw them out.”

Then she added, “The set is expensive. It’s a limited edition, and I couldn’t stand to see it wasted, so I kept i I’ll buy you a new one, Nora.”

“Julian,” Nora said. “Turn around and close your eyes.”

He turned around and closed them.

Cloth ripped, and a scream went up right behind it.

”

Nora had reached out, taken a fistful of Olivia’s collar, and pulled until the seam let go.

The front of the top came apart, and Olivia was still screaming.

She crossed both arms over her chest and shrieked at Nora. “How could you tear the clothes off me!”

The rip ran wide open, and even with both arms in the way a bra strap showed, along with a strip of lace.

Nora drew her hand back without any hurry. “Those are my clothes. I’ll tear them any way I like.

“You already had your chance. You wouldn’t put them in the trash, so I took care of it for you.”

Rage brought tears up in Olivia’s eyes. “You treat me like this and you’re not worried? I could refuse to treat him. Madam Weston would be angry enough to make the two of you divorce.”

Nora took a step toward her.

The look on her face was cold enough to drive Olivia back.

For every step Olivia gave up, Nora took one, until there was nowhere left to go and her back hit the doorframe.

“Nora, what do you actually want from me?”

Nora stopped in front of her, eyes flat. “Don’t ever threaten me with your medicine again.

“You’re a doctor. Holding treatment over my head means you have no ethics at all, and now I’m not sure I

you anywhere near him.

“It’s a big world. You aren’t the only person alive who can treat this.”

Olivia’s mouth curled. “What, are you about to bring up the Snowbell Healer? That’s my grandmother. She adores me, and if she hears how you’ve treated me, she’ll be angry enough that even I won’t be able to talk her into helping him.”

Nora laughed at that. “Who says your grandmother is the Snowbell Healer at all? Maybe she’s a fake.”

“You… don’t tell me you think you’re the Snowbell Healer.” Olivia laughed out loud. “My grandmother was recognized by the Caduceus Order. There’s nothing fake about her. If you want to smear someone, at least come up with a better story!”

“Fine. If you say so.” Nora dropped the subject and flicked at the shredded fabric hanging off her instead.

Olivia slapped her hand away.

Nora pulled it back. “Think hard about what you actually are in this house. You came here as a family doctor, so be one. I can replace you any day of the week, and then you don’t get a shot at anything.

“And save the sweet act for somebody else. Nothing works on me, sweet or otherwise, and I tend to make my point with my hands.

“Reasoning with you is a waste of my evening. Hurt someone like you badly enough, and they learn fast.”

Nora straightened up and gave her one last look. “Don’t wear my clothes again. Next time it won’t stop at a bare shoulder.”

She walked back to Julian, who stood exactly where she had left him, back turned and eyes shut.

Nora took his hand. “Keep them closed until we’re inside. Then get the staff into the living room. I want a meeting.”

He kept them shut. “Done.”

She led him in by the hand, and he didn’t open his eyes until she told him he could.

Julian sent word for every person on the estate to report to the living room, and he gave them half an hour

to do it.

Constance had already gone to bed, and they woke her and walked her downstairs.

“What’s happened?” She came down frowning.

Tessa came over with her household, and Marlene came with hers.

The notice was short enough that both of them had to drive over from the other houses on the grounds.

There had been no time for makeup, and they had barely managed to get out of their pajamas.

Everyone assumed a summons at that hour meant something had happened to Julian, or that he was
